About this product
The Aeotec Nano Switch is a relay small enough to hide in the wall box behind a switch you already have. The light, the fan or the socket it controls becomes something you can switch from a phone, put on a schedule or fold into a scene, and the switch on the wall keeps working exactly as it did for everybody who never wants to open an app.
- Where the Aeotec Nano Switch goes and why
- The number on the carton is not the number for Tanzania
- It switches, it does not dim
- Box depth, and the controller it needs
- What to have ready
Read this first: it is Z-Wave, not Wi-Fi. It will not talk to your phone on its own. It needs a Z-Wave controller, and we sell three that run it: the Fibaro Home Center Lite, the Fibaro Home Center 2 and the Homey Pro.
And an electrician fits it. It wires into the back box behind the switch, on live, load and the two switch terminals.
Like every mains powered Z-Wave device it also repeats the signal, so each one you fit makes the network reach a little further.
Where the Aeotec Nano Switch goes and why
Behind the switch plate, in the back box, wired onto live, load and the two switch terminals. Nothing on the wall changes. The plate stays, the switch keeps its click, and anyone in the house who has no interest in an app carries on exactly as before. That is the whole argument for a hidden module over a smart switch plate, and it is a stronger argument in a house with guests, staff or children in it than any feature list.
The number on the carton is not the number for Tanzania
The box is badged 15 A and says underneath, in Aeotec own words, region dependent. At 230 V the figure is 10 A, roughly 2300 W. It falls to 5 A on inductive loads such as motors and fans, and to 3.5 A on capacitive loads, which is where most LED lighting sits. Give your electrician the 230 V figures and not the carton.
It switches, it does not dim
On a dimmable circuit this module will give you on and off and nothing between. If you want the brightness to move, the Nano Dimmer is the module for that job and it is a different part. Worth settling before the electrician is on the ladder.
Box depth, and the controller it needs
Aeotec recommend a 65 mm deep back box. A 45 mm box can work where there is room behind the existing switch and the cabling is not already crowded; the module itself is only 42.5 by 40 by 20 mm. And it is Z-Wave, not Wi-Fi, so a controller comes first. We sell three that run it.
What to have ready
The circuit it will switch, the load in watts, and a photo of the inside of the back box if you have one. That is enough for us to tell you whether it will fit and whether the load is inside the 230 V figures.
For two circuits from the same box there is the Aeotec Dual Nano Switch, and for dimmable lighting the Aeotec Nano Dimmer. The Aeotec product page is at aeotec.com.

Questions
Do I need anything else to use it?
Yes, two things. A Z-Wave controller, because this is not a Wi-Fi device and it will not pair with a phone on its own: the Fibaro Home Center Lite, the Fibaro Home Center 2 and the Homey Pro all run it and we sell all three. And an electrician, because it is wired into the wall.
Will it fit in my wall box?
The module is 42.5 by 40 by 20 mm, which is small, but the question is what is already in the box behind your switch. Aeotec recommend 65 mm of depth and a 45 mm box can work if it is not crowded. Have your electrician open the switch and look before you buy, or send us a photograph of the back box with the switch pulled forward.
Does my existing wall switch still work?
Yes, and that is the point of fitting a module rather than replacing the switch plate. The switch stops feeding the light directly and starts telling the module what to do instead, so it behaves the same to anyone using it. Momentary and toggle switches are both supported.
Why does the box say 15 amps?
Because that is the figure for 110 to 120 volt countries, and Aeotec print region dependent underneath it. On our 230 V supply the module is rated 10 A resistive, about 2300 W, 5 A on motors and 3.5 A on capacitive loads. Those are the numbers to give your electrician.
Will it dim my lights?
No. It switches on and off. If what you want is a dimmable circuit on your phone, tell us and we will quote the dimmer module instead, because fitting this one and then wanting dimming means opening the wall twice.
Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight.
