The cheapest way to do several rooms
Price is the honest reason to choose a SONOFF Mini over a Shelly. It is the module that makes doing three or four rooms at once realistic rather than a project you spread over a year.
The compromise is the load rating and the app, both covered below. For ordinary lighting circuits neither matters much, and that is exactly what most people are doing when they buy several at a time.
The wall switch keeps working
It wires to the module rather than to the light, so a tap on the wall still turns the room on and off for anyone who never opens an app.
Two way switching is supported, so a landing light with a switch at the top and bottom of the stairs still works from both. That is the arrangement that defeats a lot of cheap modules.
DIY mode, if you run Home Assistant
The module exposes a local REST API, so Home Assistant and similar systems can drive it directly on your own network instead of through SONOFF's cloud.
If none of that means anything to you, it changes nothing: the eWeLink app works normally either way. If it does mean something, it is the reason technical buyers pick SONOFF over cheaper unbranded modules.
Measure the back box first
It is 42.6 x 42.6 x 20mm, which is chunkier than the Shelly modules, and that is the thing to check before you buy several.
An older shallow box, or one already crowded with two switches worth of wiring, may not take it. Have the electrician look at one before you order for the whole house, because the cost of finding out afterwards is a second order.
SONOFF Mini ratings, and what it will not do
Rated 10A at 100 to 240V, which is a lighting rating rather than a geyser one. No metering and no dimming.
It runs eWeLink with no hub and no subscription, and works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings. If you are wiring a whole house rather than a room or two, the Zigbee version, the SONOFF ZBMINI, keeps ten modules off your router at the cost of needing a gateway. Questions
Will it fit in my wall box?
It is 42.6 by 42.6 by 20 mm, which is bigger than most of the modules on this page, and depth is what catches people out. Have your electrician open the switch and look before you buy, or send us a photograph of the back box with the switch pulled forward.
Does my existing wall switch still work?
Yes, and that is the point of a module rather than a smart switch plate. It also supports a two way circuit, so a light switched from two ends keeps behaving normally.
Which app does it use?
eWeLink, which is SONOFF's own and is not the app most of the other products in this shop use. Voice control still reaches everything through Alexa or Google, so a spoken command does not care which app a device belongs to.
What is DIY mode?
It opens a local REST API on the module so systems like Home Assistant can control it directly on your own network, without the cloud in the middle. If you are not running one of those, ignore it and use the app.
