What the Shelly Plus 1PM metering is actually for
A geyser, a borehole pump, a chest freezer or a security floodlight each cost real money every month and almost nobody knows how much.
A Shelly Plus 1PM reports what the circuit is drawing in watts now and kilowatt hours over time, so the guess becomes a figure. On Tanzanian tariffs, finding out that a geyser left on all day is costing more than everything else combined is worth the module on its own.
It is also a diagnostic
A pump drawing more than it used to is a pump with a problem. A freezer cycling far more often than last month has a seal going, or a door that is not closing.
Metering turns a relay into something that tells you a fault is coming before the appliance fails. That is a different class of useful from switching a light, and it is why the PM version is worth the difference on anything that matters.
Protection built into the module
Overheating, overvoltage and overcurrent protection are all on board.
On a circuit that pulls hard, in a hot back box, in a house where the supply is not always steady, that matters. The module will cut rather than cook itself, which is not true of every cheap relay sold for the same job.
The Plus generation, and where it hides
Bluetooth alongside Wi-Fi means setup happens from the phone without joining a temporary network first, and there is a faster processor with on-device scripting.
It is 37 x 42 x 16mm and lives in the back box behind the switch you already have. An electrician wires it on live, neutral and the load, with the existing switch on the input, and that switch keeps working exactly as before.
16A, and what it will not do
Rated 16A, running on 110 to 240V AC or 24 to 48V DC or 12V DC. It does not dim. A dimmer is a different module.
If you do not need the metering, the Shelly Plus 1 is the same module without it and has a dry contact output for gates and boilers. For two metered circuits, or a roller shutter, that is the Plus 2PM. No hub and no account: it keeps a local web interface so the schedule keeps running when the internet is down. The manufacturer datasheet lives at shelly.com.

Questions
What will the metering tell me?
Watts right now, so you can see what a pump or a freezer pulls while it runs, and kilowatt hours over time, which is the number that becomes money on the bill.
What does the Plus add over the older 1PM?
Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi, which makes pairing simpler, a faster processor and scripting on the device. The switching and metering side is the same 16 A.
Do I need a hub or an account?
Neither. It joins your Wi-Fi directly and keeps a web interface on your own network, so nothing stops working when the internet does.
Will it fit in my wall box?
The module is 37 by 42 by 16 mm. What decides it is the room left behind your existing switch once the cabling is in. Have your electrician look, or send us a photograph of the back box with the switch pulled forward.
