About this product

The Homey Pro 2019 is the Pro version of the Homey sphere: the same seven radios in the same white body, with twice the processing power and twice the memory behind them.

Automations are built as Flows, dragged together from a trigger, a condition and an action, so devices from brands that have never heard of each other end up working as one system.

Where the Homey Pro 2019 sits between the other two

Three Homeys sit on this shelf and they are easy to confuse. The standard Homey is the entry sphere. This is the Pro version of that same sphere: identical white body, identical seven radios, but a dual-core processor and a gigabyte of RAM instead of a single core and 512MB.

The 2023 Pro is the black disc, a generation newer, and it is the only one of the three with Matter and Thread. This one is the sphere with the headroom.

What twice the processor is actually for

A hub does not need much power to switch a light. It needs power when a hundred devices report at once and forty Flows evaluate at the same moment, which is what a mature installation looks like after a year or two.

The extra RAM lets it run dozens of Homey apps side by side without slowing down. Every brand you add is another app on the hub, and that is where the entry sphere eventually runs out of room.

Seven radios, one app

Zigbee, Z-Wave Plus 500 series, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared, 433MHz and 868MHz. Most hubs handle one protocol and leave you buying a second box for the rest.

Here the Hue lights, the Z-Wave sensors, the 433MHz sockets and the air conditioner's infrared remote all arrive in the same app and can be used in the same automation, as though they had been designed together.

An ethernet port, which the 2023 model does not have

This sphere has a built-in ethernet socket alongside Wi-Fi. A cable to the router is one less thing to drop out, and in a house with a congested 2.4GHz band it is worth having.

The newer 2023 Pro is Wi-Fi only unless you add a USB-C adapter, so if a wired hub matters to you, that is a genuine point in this one's favour rather than a specification footnote.

Talking to it, and what it costs to run

There is a microphone in the sphere, so you can speak to Homey directly, and it bridges to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for devices that have no voice control of their own.

Everything is processed locally on the device and there is no subscription. Automations keep running whether or not the internet is up. If you want Matter and Thread for what is being made now, look at the Homey Pro 2023; if the house is small and the device count modest, the standard Homey runs the same Flows for less. Questions

How is the Pro different from the standard Homey?

Same seven radios and the same sphere, with a dual-core processor and a gigabyte of RAM instead of a single core and 512 MB. In practice that means it keeps up when you are running a lot of Homey apps and a long list of automations at once. If your house is a handful of devices, the standard Homey is plenty.

What does having seven radios get me?

One hub instead of several. Zigbee for Hue and similar lights, Z-Wave for sensors and relays, 433 MHz for cheap remote sockets, infrared for the air conditioner and television, plus Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. All of it lands in the same app and can be mixed in one automation.

What is a Flow?

Homey's way of linking devices, built by dragging a trigger, a condition and an action into a row. When the doorbell rings, turn on the hallway light. When everyone leaves, shut the house down. No code required, and it works across brands.

Is there a monthly fee?

No. It processes everything on the sphere in your house. Homey sell a separate cloud service, but this is the local Pro hub and it has no subscription attached.

How does it connect to my network?

There is an ethernet port built into the sphere, which is the steadier choice for a hub, and Wi-Fi if a cable is not practical.
