The dry contact is what makes it more than a light switch
The output on a Shelly Plus 1 is a potential free dry contact. It closes a circuit rather than sending mains down it.
That is why it can drive things an ordinary relay cannot: the control circuit on a boiler, a gate motor, a garage door opener, an electric strike. Anything with a pair of terminals expecting a switch closure. A relay that only outputs mains is stuck doing lighting.
It runs on DC as well as mains
110 to 240V AC, or 24 to 48V DC, or 12V DC.
That matters in a compound with a gate controller on 12V or 24V, or an alarm panel, or anything running off a battery backup. You can put the relay on the same supply as the equipment it is switching rather than finding mains for it.
What the Plus generation adds
A faster processor, Bluetooth alongside Wi-Fi so setup happens from the phone without joining a temporary network first, and scripting that runs on the device itself.
If you are buying today and the price difference from the older Shelly 1 is small, buy this one. The Bluetooth setup alone saves fifteen minutes of fiddling on a job with several modules.
Your wall switch keeps working
The module hides in the back box behind the switch you already have. The existing switch goes on the input, and it carries on doing exactly what it did before.
That is the whole appeal of an in-wall relay over a smart switch plate: nothing about the room changes, nobody has to learn anything, and a guest presses the switch on the wall as they always would.
What the Shelly Plus 1 does not do
No metering and no dimming. If you want to know what the circuit is drawing, that is the Shelly Plus 1PM. If you want to dim a light, that is a dimmer module, not a relay.
Rated 16A AC and 10A DC. It is 37 x 42 x 16mm and 26g, and an electrician fits it on live, neutral and the load. No hub and no account: it keeps a local web interface, so schedules survive an internet outage. Shelly keep the technical documentation at shelly.com.

What does this do that the older Shelly 1 does not?
A faster processor, Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi so pairing is simpler, and scripting on the device. The switching side is the same 16 A dry contact. Both are on the shelf and we are happy to talk you through which suits the job.
Do I need a hub or an account?
Neither. It joins your Wi-Fi and keeps a web interface on your own network, so the wall switch and any schedule carry on working when the internet is down.
What is the dry contact good for?
The relay is not tied to the mains inside, so it can close the low voltage control circuit on a boiler, a gate motor or a garage door as easily as it switches a light. Tell us what you are switching and we will confirm it first.
Does my existing wall switch still work?
Yes. It stops feeding the light directly and starts telling the module what to do, so nothing changes for anyone using the room. Momentary and toggle are both supported.
