LUA scripting is what separates the Fibaro Home Center 2
Alongside the drag-and-drop scene builder there is proper scripting: real conditions, loops, variables and virtual devices you write yourself.
If you have ever hit the ceiling of a block editor and wanted to express the logic directly, this is the controller that lets you. The Home Center Lite does not have it, and that single difference decides most purchases between the two.
Headroom for a large installation
An Intel Atom dual core with a gigabyte of RAM runs up to 230 Z-Wave devices without hesitating, and the extra capacity shows when dozens of sensors fire at the same moment rather than one at a time.
That is the difference between a controller that keeps up on a busy evening and one that queues. On a house with a hundred devices it is not a specification detail, it is how the system feels to live with.
Ports, and being able to recover from a bad update
Four USB, gigabit ethernet and a VGA output. Alongside the main storage there is a separate 4GB recovery disc, so an update that goes wrong is recoverable rather than fatal.
There is a proper backup and restore system built in as well, which matters enormously once a house has a hundred devices configured against it. Rebuilding that configuration by hand is days of work.
How you actually use it day to day
The Fibaro app on iPhone and Android handles daily use: turning things on, checking sensors, running scenes. The browser interface is where the building gets done, and it is the more capable of the two by a distance.
Geolocation lets the house respond to people arriving and leaving. Everything runs on the box itself, with no subscription and no cloud dependency.
This or the Lite
Both handle up to 230 Z-Wave devices, so the device limit is not the deciding factor. Take the Home Center 2 for LUA scripting, for the processing headroom on a large installation, and for the recovery disc and the ports.
Take the Home Center Lite if block-based scenes cover what you want and the box needs to be small. If Z-Wave is not the only protocol in the house, a multi-radio hub like the Homey Pro 2023 is the other direction to consider. Fibaro publish their range at fibaro.com.

How is this different from the Home Center Lite?
Processing power and LUA. This one has an Intel Atom dual core with a gigabyte of RAM, four USB ports, gigabit ethernet and a recovery disc, and it lets you write LUA scripts instead of only building scenes from blocks. Both take up to 230 Z-Wave devices, so the choice is really about how complex your automations will get.
What can I do with LUA that I cannot do with scenes?
Proper programming: conditions, loops, variables, and virtual devices you build yourself. Block editors run out of road once logic gets nested, and this is where people move to when that happens. If you never intend to write a line of code, the Lite will serve you just as well.
How many devices will it take?
Up to 230 on the Z-Wave network. Sensors, dimmers, relays, blinds, locks and thermostats all live on the same controller and can be linked to each other.
Is there a monthly fee?
No. Everything runs on the box in your house and there is nothing to subscribe to.
What should I check before buying?
That your Z-Wave devices are on the same frequency band. Ours is the European 868 MHz version, and Z-Wave kit bought in the United States runs on a different band and will not pair with it. Tell us what you already own and we will confirm before anything ships.
