About this product

A WiFi door sensor for doors and windows that joins 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi directly. No hub, no gateway, nothing else to buy. Stick the two halves on, add it in the Smart Life app and your phone is told within a few seconds of the door opening.

It goes anywhere you want to know about: front door, back door, windows, cabinets, drawers, a store room, a shop shutter, an office.

What a WiFi door sensor saves you

The hub. Zigbee and Z-Wave sensors are cheaper individually and better in a large system, but neither will do anything until you have bought a gateway and got it onto the network. This one joins your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi on its own. Stick the two halves on, add it in the Smart Life app, and it is working in five minutes. For one door, or three, that is the sensible way round.

The 1 cm gap tolerance matters more than it sounds

Most contacts want the two halves within a few millimetres of each other, which is fine on a new aluminium window and hopeless on a timber door that has moved with the seasons, or on a shop shutter that never quite sits in the same place. This one tolerates about a centimetre with the door closed, so it can be fitted on doors where a stricter sensor would give you false openings all day.

History and sharing

Every opening is logged in the app with a time, so the question of when the store room was opened has an answer rather than an argument. And the device can be shared with other accounts, so the whole family or the whole shop gets the same alerts rather than everything landing on one phone.

What you give up against Zigbee

Battery life and router capacity. Two AAA cells give over six months here, where a Zigbee sensor on a coin cell goes for a year or two. And every Wi-Fi sensor takes a slot on your router. On one or two doors neither matters. On fifteen, buy a gateway and go Zigbee. We would rather tell you that now than sell you fifteen of these.

What is in the box

The two AAA cells are included, and both tape and screws for fitting. The app warns you before the batteries die. Alerts arrive in roughly 3 to 10 seconds depending on your connection, and it answers to Alexa and Google Assistant. An opening can also switch other Tuya devices, so a door can turn on a light.

For a larger installation, the Zigbee door sensor is the better long term choice. If you are on Shelly, the Shelly Door Sensor 2 adds tilt and vibration. Setup happens in Smart Life, which is a free download.

Questions

Do I need a hub?

No. It joins your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi on its own. If you would rather run a hub and get longer battery life, the Zigbee version is the one to buy.

Which app?

Smart Life or Tuya. Either one, they are the same system, and most of the other Wi-Fi devices we sell live in the same app.

Will it work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. It needs the 2.4 GHz band. Most routers broadcast both, so this is usually only a problem if 2.4 GHz has been switched off.

Are the batteries included?

Yes, two AAA cells, and they last over six months. The app tells you when they are low.

How far from the router can it be?

It has to stay inside the Wi-Fi coverage of the house. If the front gate is out of range, a Zigbee sensor with a hub will reach further.

Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight.
