About this product

The Shelly Dimmer hides behind the switch you already have, and that switch keeps working.

Two things decide whether this will work in your house, and both are covered below.

Read this first: the bulbs have to be dimmable

An ordinary LED bulb on a dimmer flickers, buzzes or simply refuses to work, and no module fixes that.

The bulb has to be marked dimmable on the box. This is the single most common reason a Shelly Dimmer install disappoints, and it has nothing to do with the module. Check the lamps you own before ordering, and if you are replacing them anyway, buy dimmable ones.

It works with or without a neutral

That matters in older houses where the switch box has only a live and a switched line, which in a lot of Dar wiring is what you find.

On very small LED loads without a neutral, a bypass is needed, and we sell it separately. Tell us the fitting and how many lamps and we will tell you whether yours needs one, rather than leaving you to find out when the lights glow faintly at night.

The Shelly Dimmer load range, narrower than a relay

Shelly publish 10 to 200W on dimmable LED and 10 to 220W on incandescent and halogen, at 0.1 to 1.1A. It also drives ferromagnetic transformers.

Note the minimum as well as the maximum. A single 5W LED lamp is below the bottom of the range, and that is exactly where a bypass becomes necessary. Four or five lamps on a circuit is a much happier load than one.

The wall switch keeps dimming

The switch you already have goes on the input and carries on working. A short press switches; a long press dims.

So anybody in the room can set the level by hand, without the app, without an account and without being on your Wi-Fi. The same light also dims from the phone, on a schedule, or as part of a scene.

Fitting and independence

42 x 36 x 14mm in the back box, on a 110 to 230V supply. An electrician fits it. Overload protection and temperature protection at 95C are built in.

No hub and no account: it joins your Wi-Fi and keeps a local web interface, so dimming levels and schedules survive an internet outage. If the circuit does not need dimming, a plain Shelly 1 is cheaper and rated far higher at 16A. The dimmer documentation is at shelly.com.

What’s in the box

Not yet defined.

We are still collecting box contents from the manufacturers. Ask us on WhatsApp and we will open one on the shelf and tell you exactly what is inside.

Questions

Will it dim the bulbs I already have?

Only if the box says dimmable. A standard LED bulb on any dimmer flickers, buzzes or refuses to come on at low level, and that is the bulb, not the module. Send us a photograph of the bulb and we will tell you.

Do I need the bypass?

On a very small LED load, yes. Below the module's minimum there is not enough current for it to power itself cleanly and you get flicker or a faint glow when off. Tell us the fitting and how many lamps are on the circuit and we will say whether to add one.

I have no neutral in the switch box. Does that rule it out?

No. This is one of the modules that works either way, which is why it suits older houses. Your electrician will still want to see what is in the box first.

Does the wall switch still dim it?

Yes. A tap is on and off, a long press ramps the brightness up and down, so somebody who never opens the app loses nothing.

Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight.
