Nothing on the wall changes
The Shelly 1 hides in the back box behind the switch you already have, and that switch keeps working exactly as it did.
That is the whole argument for an in-wall module over a smart switch plate. Nobody has to learn anything, a guest presses the switch on the wall as they always would, and the room looks the same. The intelligence is invisible.
The dry contact is what makes it versatile
The relay is potential free: it closes a circuit rather than sending mains down it.
So the same module that switches a light can close the control circuit on a boiler, a gate motor or a garage door, none of which want mains from a relay. It also runs on 12V or 24 to 60V DC as well as mains, which is what puts it on gate controllers and alarm panels rather than only on lighting.
No hub, no account, and it survives an outage
It joins your Wi-Fi directly and keeps a local web interface and a local API.
So the schedule you set carries on running when the internet is down, and Home Assistant or a script of your own can drive it with nothing travelling to a server. That is the reason people who have been let down by a cloud platform go looking for Shelly in the first place.
Whether it will fit
It is 36 x 41 x 17mm. The real question is whether there is room in your back box, not whether the module is small enough.
Older shallow boxes and boxes already crowded with three switches worth of wiring are where these jobs go wrong. Have the electrician look before you order several. It wires onto live, neutral and the load, with the existing switch feeding the SW terminal.
What the Shelly 1 will not do
It does not measure power and it does not dim. Rated 16A at 250V AC, or 10A DC at 60V, and it handles resistive and capacitive loads, and inductive ones with an RC snubber.
For metering choose the Shelly 1PM. For dimming, the Shelly Dimmer. And if you are buying today rather than matching existing hardware, the newer Shelly Plus 1 adds Bluetooth setup and a faster processor for very little more. Everything Shelly make is listed at shelly.com.

Questions
Do I need a hub or an account?
Neither. It joins your Wi-Fi directly and it keeps a web interface of its own on the local network, so schedules and the wall switch carry on working when the internet is down. The app and the cloud are optional extras, not the thing holding it together.
Will it fit in my wall box?
The module is 36 by 41 by 17 mm. What decides it is how much room is left behind your existing switch once the cabling is in there. Have your electrician open one and look, or send us a photograph of the back box with the switch pulled forward.
What is a dry contact and why does it matter?
It means the relay inside is not wired to the mains: it just closes a bare pair of terminals. So besides switching a light, this one can close the control circuit on a boiler, a gate motor or a garage door, which a mains-only relay cannot do safely. Tell us what you are switching and we will confirm before you buy.
Does my existing wall switch still work?
Yes. The switch stops feeding the light directly and starts telling the module what to do. Anyone using the room sees no difference. Momentary and toggle switches are both supported.
Will it tell me how much power the light is using?
No. The Shelly 1 switches only. If you want the consumption figures, the Shelly 1PM is the same module with metering added, and we sell it.
