Why the Shelly 1L needs no neutral, and why that matters
Most in-wall modules need a live and a neutral in the switch box. In older Dar wiring the switch box often has only the live and the switched line going up to the fitting.
That single fact rules out every other module on this page. The Shelly 1L works from those two wires alone, so in a house that was never wired with neutrals at the switches, it is the difference between doing this at all and not doing it.
What you give up: the load rating
4.1A, about a fifth of a normal relay.
That is comfortable for lighting and wrong for a heater, a pump or a geyser. Do not size this against the 16A modules elsewhere in this category; if the load is heavy, you need a neutral and a proper relay, and there is no way around it.
The bypass, and why it is in the box
Working without a neutral, the module draws its own power through the load. It needs a minimum of about 20W to do that, and modern LED bulbs often draw far less.
That is what the bypass is for. It sits at the light fitting, not in the switch box, and makes up the difference. Without it, low wattage LEDs flicker or glow faintly when they should be off, which is the single most common complaint about no-neutral modules and the reason this one ships with the bypass included.
Fitting and switches
38 x 43 x 14mm, and an electrician fits it — with the bypass at the fitting rather than in the switch box, which is worth saying to them explicitly before they start.
It takes one or two wall switches on its inputs and works with either momentary or toggle switches, so an existing plate carries on unchanged.
What it does not do
No metering and no dimming. It switches only.
If your switch box does have a neutral, you are not limited to this module and the Shelly 1 gives you 16A and a dry contact output for the same money. Check with your electrician before ordering, because it is a five minute look and it changes which product you want. Questions
How do I know whether I have a neutral in the switch box?
Have your electrician open the switch. If there is only a live and a switched line going up to the light, you have no neutral there and this is the module you need. If there is a neutral, the ordinary Shelly 1 or 1PM will carry far more load for less money.
What is the bypass for and do I have to use it?
Without a neutral the module draws its own power through the lamp. Under about 20 W there is not enough for it, and the symptoms are a bulb that flickers, glows faintly when off, or will not switch cleanly. The bypass sits at the light fitting and makes up the difference. On LED lighting you will almost always need it.
What can I put on it?
Lighting. 4.1 A is roughly 900 W, and that is a ceiling for the circuit, not a target. A heater, a geyser or a pump belongs on a full relay with a neutral.
Does my existing wall switch still work?
Yes, and it takes two of them if you have a two way circuit. Momentary and toggle switches are both supported.
