About this product

The Lightwave RF Smart Relay is an in-line relay from the Lightwave range. It goes into the cable feeding a light, a fan or a motor and puts that circuit under radio control, from a Lightwave wall switch, a handset, or the app once a hub is added.

Read this first: it is 433 MHz radio, not Wi-Fi. On its own it pairs with Lightwave switches and remotes and works entirely locally, which is a real advantage when the internet is down. For the phone app, schedules and voice control it needs the Lightwave Link Plus hub, which we sell separately.

Where the Lightwave RF Smart Relay earns its place

On a circuit with no smart switch in front of it and no room behind the plate for a module. Old back boxes in this city are often shallow and already full of cable, and there is nothing to be done about that from the front. This relay goes in line instead, at the fitting or up in the ceiling void, where there is space. It is frequently the only workable answer on an older installation.

It keeps working when the internet does not

Paired to Lightwave wall switches and handsets it runs on 433 MHz radio between the switch and the relay, with nothing passing through a router or a server. Power cut aside, a line outage does not touch it. The app, timers and voice control are the layer that needs the Lightwave Link Plus hub, and those are the parts that stop when the connection does.

What you control it with

Lightwave wall switches, Lightwave handsets and remotes, and the phone app once a hub is on the network. All three can drive the same relay, so a household can split however it likes: the switch for the people who want a switch, the app for the people who want an app.

Siting it properly

Indoors, dry and out of reach. The terminals carry mains and the module is not weather sealed, so a ceiling void or the back of a fitting is right and an outdoor junction box is not. An electrician cuts it into the cable feeding the load.

Confirm the load rating with us

Lightwave publish different ratings across this range depending on the exact model and the type of load, and we would rather read the figure off the unit in stock than print the wrong one here. Tell us what it will switch, a lamp, a fan or a motor, and we will check the box on the shelf.

For three circuits from one point there is the Lightwave RF 3x Relay. The manufacturer is at lightwaverf.com.

Questions

Do I need the hub?

Not to switch it. Paired to a Lightwave wall switch or handset it works on its own, on radio, with no internet involved. You need the Lightwave Link Plus for the phone app, schedules, and voice control, and we sell it.

Where does it go?

Into the cable feeding the light or the motor, usually at the fitting or in the ceiling void rather than the switch box, which is often the only place with room. An electrician wires it.

How much load will it take?

We will read the figure off the unit rather than print one we are not sure of. Tell us what you want to switch and we will confirm it against the label before you buy.

Will it work with Lightwave switches I already have?

That is exactly what it is for. It pairs to the Lightwave switches and remotes in the same range, so an existing installation extends rather than starts again.

Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight.
