About this product

A euro cylinder with a keypad and a fingerprint reader on the outside knob. It replaces the barrel in the lock you already have, so the door, the handle and the mortise are untouched. Ten minutes with a screwdriver and one screw.

The keypad is the difference between this and the fingerprint cylinder: a code can be given to somebody over the phone, and it works for a person who has never stood at the door before. Codes are 6 to 12 digits and you can hold 30 of them. You can also type junk digits before or after the real code, so a bystander watching learns nothing.

Five ways in: fingerprint, code, the Tuya app over Bluetooth, an IC card and the mechanical key. It stores 100 fingerprints and reads at any angle. The cylinder is a C-level core in aluminium alloy and brass, and it fits either handed door with no left or right version to choose.

It is Bluetooth. Your phone has to be near the door for the app to reach it. To send a code or read the access log while you are away, add the Tuya Bluetooth Hub, which we sell separately. Measure your existing cylinder before ordering, because length is the one thing that has to match.

What the keypad adds

A keypad cylinder lock does everything the plain fingerprint cylinder does and one thing it cannot: a code can be given to somebody over the phone. That matters for a person who has never stood at the door before and cannot enrol a finger in advance, which covers most deliveries, contractors and guests.

Codes run from 6 to 12 digits and it holds 30 of them. You can pad the real code with junk digits before or after it, so somebody watching over your shoulder learns a string that will not work twice.

Five ways in

Fingerprint, code, the Tuya app over Bluetooth, an IC card and the mechanical key. It stores 100 fingerprints and the semiconductor sensor reads at any angle. The core is a C-level cylinder in aluminium alloy and brass, and it fits either handed door, so there is no left or right version to specify when you order.

The app adds temporary codes, eKeys, an access log and passage mode, which holds the door unlocked through the working day and locks it again after.

Fitting a keypad cylinder lock

The barrel comes out and this goes in. Ten minutes and one screw, with the door, the handle and the mortise untouched, on wooden, metal or composite doors that take a euro cylinder.

Power is three AAA cells with a USB port on the outside for emergency power, and it works from -20 to 70 degrees C. It is a Bluetooth device, so the phone has to be at the door unless you add the Tuya Bluetooth Hub, sold separately. Measure your existing cylinder before ordering: length has to match, and we would rather check the figure with you than have one turn up that will not go in.

The cylinder length is the whole job

Everything else about fitting this is ten minutes and one screw. The length is the part that goes wrong, so measure the barrel already in your door, both sides of the screw hole, and send us the two figures before you pay.

If nobody needs a code read to them down the phone, the plain fingerprint cylinder is cheaper and does the rest of this. Worth a moment before deciding. Both cylinders sit in smart locks, and the app is documented at tuya.com.

Questions

How do I know it will fit my door?

Measure your existing cylinder. Take the screw out of the edge of the door, pull the cylinder, and measure from the centre of the screw hole to each end. Tell us those two numbers, or send a photo with a tape beside it, and we will confirm the size before you pay. Length is the only thing that has to match and it is the commonest mistake.

How is this different from the fingerprint cylinder?

This one has a keypad. That matters when you need to give access to somebody who is not standing at your door: you read them a code over the phone. The fingerprint cylinder is neater and quicker for the people who live there, but a finger cannot be sent down a phone line.

Can I open it from my phone when I am not home?

Not on its own. It uses Bluetooth, so your phone has to be near the door. Add the Tuya Bluetooth Hub, which we sell separately, and codes and access records reach you anywhere.

Do I have to change the door or the handle?

No. Only the barrel comes out. The door, the handle, the mortise and the strike all stay as they are, which is why this suits rented property and shop units where you cannot cut anything.

Can somebody watching me learn my code?

Not easily. Type any number of junk digits before or after the real code and it still opens, so what a bystander sees is not the code.
