About this product
The Aeotec Home Energy Meter tells you what the house is actually using, minute by minute, instead of once a month on a bill.
- How the Aeotec Home Energy Meter clamp works
- Minute by minute instead of monthly
- Two things to plan for before ordering
- One clamp, one supply
- Z-Wave, or something simpler
How the Aeotec Home Energy Meter clamp works
The clamp on the Aeotec Home Energy Meter is split core: it opens, clips around the incoming live cable and closes again.
Nothing is cut and nothing is disconnected. The clamp reads the magnetic field around the cable rather than carrying the current itself, which is why it can go on a live supply without breaking it. The cable has to be no more than 10mm through the clamp.
Minute by minute instead of monthly
A bill tells you what the house used last month. This tells you what it is using right now, in watts, plus kilowatt hours, volts and amps.
The reporting interval is yours to set in the hub. Turn it up to a reading every few seconds while you walk round switching things off to find what is drawing power, then back it off to something sensible for daily logging. Aeotec quote accuracy of better than 99 per cent above 0.05A.
Two things to plan for before ordering
It is a Z-Wave device and needs a Z-Wave hub. It belongs in a house already running one, such as Home Assistant or SmartThings with a Z-Wave stick. There is no Wi-Fi in it.
And it goes inside or beside the distribution board, wired to mains at 230V, so a licensed electrician does the fitting. Aeotec say so in their own manual and we are not going to soften it.
One clamp, one supply
This is the single clamp version, which reads one incoming supply and reports it as one figure.
If you have a three phase board, or you want to see the geyser, the air conditioning and the rest as three separate lines rather than one lump, that is the three clamp version.
Z-Wave, or something simpler
The clamp reads 0 to 60A on the EU version at 868MHz, and the unit is 99 x 66 x 34mm, so it fits beside most boards.
If you are not running Z-Wave and have no plans to, do not buy a Z-Wave meter to get one reading. The Shelly EM does a similar job straight over your own Wi-Fi with no hub at all, reads two circuits rather than one, and stores a year of history in the device. Aeotec publish the meter at aeotec.com.

Questions
Does anything have to be cut or disconnected?
No. The clamp is split core: it opens, goes around the incoming cable and closes again. The meter body itself does need a mains connection, which is the part that needs an electrician.
Do I need an electrician?
Yes, and Aeotec say so themselves. The unit is fitted at the distribution board and wired to mains. This is not a plug-in device.
Do I need a hub?
Yes. It speaks Z-Wave and nothing else, so it needs a Z-Wave controller on the network before it will report anything. Ask us before ordering if you are not already running one.
How accurate is it?
Aeotec quote better than 99 per cent above 0.05 A. That is good enough to see individual appliances switching on and off once the reporting interval is turned up.
What is the difference between this and the three clamp version?
This one meters a single incoming supply. The three clamp version handles a three phase board, one clamp per phase, and can report each clamp separately.
