Which two circuits to put the Shelly EM energy meter on
Two 120A clip-on clamps come with the Shelly EM energy meter, which is enough for the main incomer on one channel and a heavy circuit on the other.
The pairing worth choosing is the whole house against your biggest single load, usually the geyser or the air conditioning. That single comparison answers the question everybody actually has, which is what proportion of the bill one appliance is responsible for.
It measures more than watts
Active power, reactive power, voltage, current, power factor and frequency.
Power factor and frequency are not vanity figures on a Tanzanian supply. A poor power factor on motors and compressors means current you are drawing but not usefully converting, and voltage and frequency readings tell you what your supply is actually doing over a day rather than what it should be doing.
A year of history, stored in the device
365 days of energy history is kept in the meter itself, not only in somebody's cloud.
That matters more than it sounds. It means the history survives whether or not you use a cloud service, whether or not the internet is up, and whether or not the manufacturer keeps offering the service. A year is also long enough to compare a dry season against a wet one.
Open, and readable locally
As well as the app, the EM exposes a local web interface, a REST API, MQTT and CoAP on your own network.
So Home Assistant, Grafana or a script of your own can read it directly with no internet in the loop. If you are building any kind of energy dashboard at home, this is the meter that will talk to it.
The relay is not what people assume
There is a 2A relay output on board. That is not for switching a load. Two amps will not run a geyser or anything else worth metering.
It is there to drive an external contactor, so the meter can shed a heavy circuit on command. Wiring a load straight to it is a mistake with real consequences, and it is worth saying plainly.
Installation is at the distribution board with the clamps clipped over existing cables, so a licensed electrician does the fitting. It runs on 110 to 230V, draws under 1W itself, and needs no hub. If your house runs Z-Wave rather than Wi-Fi, the Aeotec Home Energy Meter is the equivalent. Shelly publish the range at shelly.com.

Questions
Do I need a hub?
No. It joins your Wi-Fi on the 2.4 GHz band by itself. That is the main difference between it and the Aeotec meters, which need a Z-Wave controller.
What can I do with two channels?
Meter two things separately. The usual arrangement here is the main incomer on one clamp and the geyser or the air conditioning on the other, so you can see what the expensive circuit is really costing.
Can I use it without the internet?
Yes. It has a local web interface and speaks REST, MQTT and CoAP on your own network, and it stores a year of history in the device itself. Home Assistant reads it directly.
What is the relay for?
Driving an external contactor, not switching the load. It is rated 2 A, so it is a control signal. That is how you would have it shed a heavy circuit automatically.
Do I need an electrician?
Yes. It is fitted at the distribution board and wired to mains. The clamps themselves clip over existing cables without cutting anything.
