The Wyze Cam Outdoor starter bundle is the complete package: one wire-free camera and the Base Station it needs. This is the one to buy first, because the camera cannot work without the base station, and the add-on camera sold separately does not include one.

The Base Station plugs into your router by Ethernet and is what the camera actually talks to. It also takes a microSD card, so recordings can be kept locally with no monthly fee. Once it is set up, one base station runs up to four cameras, and you extend the system with add-on cameras.

The camera is fully wire-free and rated IP65. It records 1080p, wakes on a PIR sensor that reacts to body heat, and typically gets three to six months from a charge. Two-way audio and a siren are built in.

One thing to note. Night vision here is infrared, so footage after dark is black and white rather than colour.

Two pieces of hardware. The WVOD1 camera, which is the part you mount outside, and the WVODB1 Base Station, which sits indoors near your router. The camera talks to the base rather than straight to your Wi-Fi, and the base handles the recording and the link back to the app. That split is why this camera runs for months on a charge instead of days.

One base station will carry up to four cameras, so you buy this bundle once and add cameras later as you need them.

Battery life and how the camera decides to record

Wyze rates the battery at three to six months per charge. The spread is real and it comes down to how much traffic passes the lens. A camera watching a quiet side wall lasts closer to six months. One pointed at a gate that opens forty times a day drains faster.

Recording is event based. The PIR sensor picks up body heat moving through the frame, wakes the camera and it records a clip. Nothing happens in between, which is what preserves the battery. If you want continuous footage rolling all day, this is not the camera for that job.

Picture quality, night vision and zoom

1080p at a 110 degree field of view, which covers a normal gate or driveway without the fish eye stretch. Frame rate runs at 20fps in good light and drops to 10fps at night. There is 8x digital zoom in the app for reading a plate or a face after the fact.

After dark the camera switches to infrared, so the picture is black and white. This model has no colour night vision and no spotlight.

Is this the right outdoor camera for your compound

Buy it if the wall you have in mind has no power point near it and you are happy with clips triggered by movement rather than a continuous feed. The IP65 body handles Dar rain. If you need colour at night, or pan and tilt, the Wyze Cam Pan v3 is the better fit, though it needs mains power.
