Four buttons is about scenes, not four lights

Most back boxes do not feed four circuits, so the Shelly Wall Switch 4 is usually bought for a different reason: a Shelly Plus i4 behind it, and four buttons that fire scenes rather than switch loads. Evening lighting on one, everything off on another, the gate on a third, the veranda on a fourth. The plate looks like an ordinary bank of switches and behaves like a scene panel.

No radio, no processor, nothing to pair, nothing that appears in an app. The Shelly module behind it in the back box does all of that, and it is a separate purchase. This is worth repeating because the product photograph looks exactly like a smart switch and it is not one. Ordered on its own, it will do nothing.

Where four buttons genuinely beats four plates

An entrance hall, the top of a staircase, or beside a bed. Those are the three places where people want several things under one hand, and where four separate plates would look like a control room. One 70 mm square face with four buttons on it is the tidy answer, and it reads as a switch to anybody walking past.

Fitting and compatibility

The included holders clip the Shelly onto the back of the plate so the assembly drops into a standard European back box as one piece. It works with Shelly 1, 1PM, 2.5, 1L and Dimmer 2, the Plus range, and the Gen3 and Gen4 units. The plate carries low voltage only, at most 12 V DC or 18 V AC at 50 mA, and an electrician fits it because the box has mains in it.

What to order with it

For scenes, the Shelly Plus i4 is the module this plate is really made for: four inputs, no load switching, everything handled as scenes. If you actually do have several circuits in the box, a Shelly Plus 2PM covers two of them.
