A heavy duty smart padlock, the bigger of our two fingerprint ones. Same idea as the S501, in a bigger body with a thicker shackle, for the jobs where the small one looks out of place: a compound gate chain, a generator cage, a container, a shop shutter.

You open it with your thumb. No key to lose, no key to cut for the second person, no keyhole to pick. It stores 10 fingerprints, which is the trade for the heavier body, so it suits a small number of named people rather than a whole staff rota.

Three ways in: fingerprint, the Tuya app over Bluetooth, and remotely through the app if you add a gateway. The app carries the access log and a passage mode that leaves it open during working hours.

It is Bluetooth. Your phone has to be near it, unless you add the Tuya Bluetooth Hub, which we sell separately. If you need more than ten people enrolled, the S501 holds thirty.

The trade is capacity. This one stores 10 fingerprints rather than thirty, so it suits a small number of named people rather than a whole staff rota. If you need more than ten enrolled, the S501 is the one to take.

No key, no keyhole

You open it with your thumb. Nothing to lose, nothing to cut for a second person, and no keyhole to pick, because a padlock with no cylinder removes the commonest way a padlock is defeated.

Battery and weather rating

A 180 mAh lithium battery charges over micro USB, giving up to three months on standby or about 800 openings on a charge.

On weather resistance the manufacturer publishes two different figures, IP65 on one listing and IP56 on another. We are not going to pick the flattering one: treat it as rain resistant rather than submersible, and if it is going somewhere fully exposed tell us and we will say so plainly.

Ten people, and a thicker shackle

That is the trade against the S501. Ten prints instead of thirty, in a body that suits a compound gate chain, a generator cage or a container. If you need more than ten people enrolled, take the smaller one and accept the slimmer shackle.

On weather: the manufacturer publishes IP65 in one place and IP56 in another, so treat it as rain resistant rather than submersible, and tell us if it is going somewhere fully exposed. Both are in smart locks. App at tuya.com.
