About this product

The Fibaro Dimmer 2 hides behind the switch you already have, and that switch keeps working.

It works without a neutral

That is the practical reason to choose a Fibaro Dimmer 2 in an older house. It runs two wire or three wire, so a switch box with only a live and a switched line is not a problem.

A great deal of Dar wiring is exactly that, and it rules out most in-wall modules. This one and the Shelly 1L are the two that work around it, and only this one dims.

Read this first: it is Z-Wave, not Wi-Fi

It needs a Z-Wave controller and one is not included. We sell three that run it: the Home Center Lite, the Home Center 2 and the Homey Pro.

If a controller is not in your plan, the Shelly Dimmer does a similar job over plain Wi-Fi with no hub, and also works without a neutral.

Two things decide whether it works properly

The bulbs must be marked dimmable. An ordinary LED lamp flickers and buzzes on any dimmer, and no module fixes that.

And on LED or CFL lamps Fibaro require the FGB-002 bypass, a separate part that sits at the fitting and stops the flicker. We stock the Aeotec bypass for a similar job. Tell us the lamps and the count and we will say which one your circuit needs, because getting this wrong is the commonest reason a dimmer install disappoints.

The Fibaro Dimmer 2 load range, top and bottom

Published as 50 to 250W resistive and 50 to 220 VA on other load types.

Note the minimum. A single 6W LED lamp is far below 50W, and that is precisely where a bypass becomes necessary rather than optional. Four or five lamps on the circuit is a much happier load than one. It also drives halogen, electronic and ferromagnetic transformers, and fluorescent with an electronic ballast.

The wall switch keeps dimming

The switch you already have goes on the input. A short press switches, a long press ramps the brightness, and the same light also dims from the app, on a schedule or as part of a scene.

So anybody in the room can set the level by hand without the app or an account. The module measures active power and energy as well as dimming, it is 42.5 x 38.25 x 20.3mm, and an electrician fits it. Fibaro own documentation is at fibaro.com.

Questions

Do I need anything else to use it?

A Z-Wave controller, which is not included, and on LED or CFL lighting a bypass as well. The Fibaro Home Center Lite, the Fibaro Home Center 2 and the Homey Pro all run it and we stock all three.

Will it dim the bulbs I already have?

Only if the box says dimmable. An ordinary LED on any dimmer flickers, buzzes or refuses at low level, and that is the bulb rather than the module. Send us a photograph of the bulb and we will tell you.

Why do I need a bypass?

Because LED and CFL lamps draw so little that the dimmer cannot power itself cleanly through them, especially with no neutral. The bypass sits at the fitting and makes up the difference. Fibaro require it on those lamp types.

I have no neutral in the switch box. Is that a problem?

No. This is one of the modules that works either way, which is why it suits older wiring. Your electrician will still want to see what is in the box first.

Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight.
