The meter is the reason to pay the difference
A geyser, a borehole pump, a freezer or a security floodlight all cost real money every month and almost nobody knows how much.
A Shelly 1PM on the circuit turns a suspicion into a number: watts now, kilowatt hours over time. On Tanzanian tariffs that is often the single most useful thing a smart home device can tell you, and it is why the metering models sell better than the plain ones on anything except lighting.
It shows a fault before the appliance does
A pump drawing more than it did six months ago is a pump wearing out. A freezer running twice as often as it used to has a seal going or a door that is not sealing.
Metering catches that early. It turns a relay into something that warns you, rather than something that only switches, and on a borehole pump that warning is worth more than the module.
Your switch keeps working, and it survives an outage
It hides in the back box behind a switch you already have, on live, neutral and the load, with the existing switch on its SW terminal. That switch carries on doing exactly what it did.
No hub and no account. It joins your Wi-Fi directly and keeps a local web interface and API, so schedules keep running when the internet is down and Home Assistant can read the metering without a cloud in the middle.
Fitting it, and the size question
36 x 41 x 17mm, and an electrician fits it. The question is whether the back box has room, particularly on older shallow boxes or a crowded three gang plate.
It has overheating protection built in, which matters in a sealed box behind a switch on a circuit that pulls hard.
Shelly 1PM ratings and the alternatives
Rated 16A at 250V AC, or 10A DC at 60V, and it also runs on a 24 to 60V DC supply. It does not dim.
If you do not need the metering, the Shelly 1 costs less and has a dry contact output for gates and boilers, which this one does not. If you are buying today rather than matching existing hardware, the Shelly Plus 1PM is the current generation with Bluetooth setup. Shelly own product pages are at shelly.com.

Questions
Do I need a hub or an account?
Neither. It joins your Wi-Fi directly and keeps a web interface on your own network, so schedules and the wall switch carry on working when the internet is down.
What will the metering actually tell me?
Watts right now, which shows what the circuit is pulling at this moment, and kilowatt hours over time, which is the number that turns into money. Put one on a geyser or a pump and you stop guessing.
Will it fit in my wall box?
The module is 36 by 41 by 17 mm. What decides it is the room left behind your existing switch. Have your electrician look first, or send us a photograph of the back box with the switch pulled forward.
Does my existing wall switch still work?
Yes. It stops feeding the light directly and starts telling the module what to do, so nobody in the house has to change anything. Momentary and toggle switches are both supported.
Can it switch a geyser?
Up to 16 A, yes, but a geyser is usually on its own dedicated circuit rather than a lighting one, and the rating of your cable and breaker decides it. Tell us the element rating and we will work it through with your electrician.
