About this product

The Shelly EM is a Wi-Fi-operated energy meter designed to monitor power consumption across two separate circuits simultaneously. Supplied with two 120A split-core current clamps, it connects directly at the distribution board, making it possible to measure a whole-home incoming supply alongside a dedicated heavy circuit such as an air conditioner or water heater.

Electrical Monitoring and Historical Data

The unit measures active power, reactive power, voltage, and power factor across both channels. It includes onboard memory capable of logging up to 365 days of energy history, retaining your data even during internet dropouts or cloud service interruptions. Overconsumption thresholds can be configured to notify you or trigger automated shutdowns.

Contactor Relay Output

In addition to energy measurement, the Shelly EM features a built-in relay rated for up to 2A at 230V AC. This output is designed specifically to switch an external contactor rather than direct appliance loads, allowing the meter to safely shed heavy equipment on schedule or when consumption thresholds are reached.

Local Integration and Connectivity

Operating over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi without requiring a separate hub, the Shelly EM provides an embedded web interface alongside support for REST API, MQTT, and CoAP protocols. This allows direct integration with home automation servers and local dashboards without routing traffic through external cloud servers. It is also compatible with the Shelly mobile app, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant.

Installation Requirements

The device requires a 110V to 240V AC power supply and draws under 1W of power. Because it wires directly into mains power at the distribution panel, installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician. The current clamps clip over insulated live conductors without cutting into wiring.

Questions

Do I need a hub to use the Shelly EM?

No. The Shelly EM connects directly to your existing 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and does not require a proprietary hub or bridge.

Can I use the Shelly EM without an internet connection?

Yes. The meter hosts an embedded web server and supports local network protocols including REST API, MQTT, and CoAP. It also stores up to 365 days of consumption data internally on the device.

What is the built-in relay used for?

The built-in relay is rated for a maximum of 2A and is intended to drive an external contactor coil. It is not designed to directly switch heavy electrical loads like water heaters or pumps.

Does the Shelly EM require an electrician to install?

Yes. The meter requires direct mains wiring at the distribution board, which should be carried out by a licensed electrician. The measurement clamps clip over existing cables without cutting them.

What electrical parameters does the device track?

It tracks active power, reactive power, voltage, and power factor across both channels.
