Why a TP-Link Kasa smart plug costs more
A TP-Link Kasa smart plug costs more than an unbranded one, and the reason is not the hardware. It is that TP-Link is a large manufacturer with a maintained app, rather than a white-label listing that changes supplier every season.
That matters over years rather than weeks. Firmware updates keep coming, the app keeps working after a phone upgrade, and the plug you buy today will still pair the same way if you buy another in two years.
Away Mode is the feature to know about
It switches a lamp on and off at varying times rather than on a rigid schedule.
A light that goes on at exactly 19:00 and off at exactly 22:30 every single night reads as a timer to anyone watching the house. Away Mode randomises it, so an empty house looks lived in. That is the one function on this plug that does something a cheap timer cannot.
It does not measure energy
The HS100 switches only. There is no metering in it, and no setting will produce a wattage figure.
If you want to see what an appliance is actually drawing, this is the wrong plug. Ask us about a metering one, or look at the Aeotec Smart Switch 6, which meters properly but needs a Z-Wave controller.
Pairing it
Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz, like almost every smart device, so pair it from a phone connected to the 2.4GHz band rather than a 5GHz one. That single detail is behind most failed setups.
No hub and no subscription. Alexa, Google Assistant and Microsoft Cortana all work with it once it is added to Kasa.
Ratings and size
Rated 13A, 2.99kW, on 100 to 240V input, so it runs anything you would put in a normal socket.
It is 100.3 x 66.3 x 77mm, which is a full-size body rather than a mini one. On a double socket it will very likely cover the second outlet, so if space is tight the mini Wi-Fi smart plug is the one that fits beside another plug. TP-Link publish the HS100 at tp-link.com.

Questions
Do I need a hub?
No. It joins your Wi-Fi directly. All you need is the free Kasa app and a 2.4 GHz network.
Why will it not connect to my Wi-Fi?
Nine times out of ten it is the band. This plug uses 2.4 GHz only, and if your phone is sitting on the 5 GHz side of a combined network the pairing fails without saying why. Switch the phone to the 2.4 GHz network for setup. If your router hides both under one name, tell us and we will talk you through it.
Will it tell me how much power my appliance uses?
No. The HS100 switches only. Metering is a different model, so if that is what you are after, ask us and we will point you at one that does it.
What is Away Mode?
It switches a lamp on and off at changing times through the evening instead of at the same minute every day. A rigid timer is easy to spot from outside; this is not.
What can I plug into it?
Anything up to 13 A or 2.99 kW. Lamps, fans, televisions, a kettle, a small heater. Not a geyser or a cooker, which are wired in rather than plugged in.
