About this product

The SwitchBot Hub Plus does two jobs from one cloud-shaped box, and both are covered below.

The SwitchBot Hub Plus does two jobs at once

The SwitchBot Hub Plus is an infrared blaster, so televisions, decoders and air conditioners come onto your phone. And it is the bridge that puts your SwitchBot devices online, which is the part that matters if you already own any.

Most people buy it for the second job and then find the first one is what they use daily, because the air conditioner is the appliance everybody wants on a schedule.

Why your SwitchBot devices need it

The Bot, the Meter and the Curtain all speak Bluetooth and nothing else. On their own they work in the room and no further.

Put a Hub Plus on your Wi-Fi and the same devices gain control from anywhere, cloud schedules, and Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT and Siri Shortcuts. Nothing about the devices changes; they simply become reachable.

The infrared fires in every direction

It sends 360 degrees rather than in one beam, so it does not have to be aimed at anything. Stand it on a shelf in the middle of the room and it covers the room.

It also learns, so a remote that is not in the built-in library can be taught by pointing your existing one at it. That is what makes it work with the odd air conditioner or decoder nobody has heard of.

It is also a night light

The cloud shape is not decoration for its own sake. It lights up softly, which is why it ends up on a bedside table or a hallway shelf rather than hidden behind the television.

That placement is worth thinking about, because a hub tucked behind furniture blocks its own infrared and weakens the Bluetooth bridge at the same time.

Two range figures published two ways

SwitchBot publish 20 metres for the infrared while a spec table publishes about 3 metres. And for the Bluetooth bridge, SwitchBot publish up to 80 metres in the open while a second source publishes 120.

We record both in each case rather than quoting the flattering number. In practice, put the hub in the room whose appliances you want to control and within sight of the SwitchBot devices it is bridging, and neither figure will matter. It joins 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, runs the SwitchBot app, and there is no subscription. SwitchBot publish the range at switch-bot.com.

Questions

Do I need this if I have a SwitchBot Bot or Curtain?

Only if you want them to work from outside the house, or by voice. On their own they are Bluetooth and they work in the room. The Hub Plus is what puts them on the internet.

Does it replace my air conditioner remote?

Yes, along with the television and the decoder. It sends infrared in every direction, so it does not need pointing at anything, and it can learn a remote the library does not already know.

Where should it go?

In the room with the appliances it controls, in the open rather than inside a cabinet, and within Bluetooth reach of any SwitchBot devices it is bridging.

Will it work with Alexa and Google?

Both, plus IFTTT and Siri Shortcuts. Everything paired to it answers to voice once it is set up.

How far does the Bluetooth bridging reach?

SwitchBot publish up to 80 metres in the open; another source publishes 120. Walls cut that down a lot, so plan on the same floor rather than the far end of a compound.
