About this product

The bright one. A spotlight security camera with 600 lumens in the front of it, adjustable both in brightness and in colour from a warm 4,000 K to a cold 6,000 K, and it is what turns night footage from infrared grey into full colour. On a driveway or a yard gate it doubles as a security light that happens to record.

Behind it is a 2K camera with a 135° view and 8× digital zoom, a PIR sensor that watches for body heat rather than movement alone, and on-device AI that picks out people. A 90 dB siren and two-way audio complete it. You can set up to two activity zones so a busy road outside your wall does not trigger it all day.

The battery is the largest in this range at 13,400 mAh, rated at about four months per charge, and footage is kept on 8 GB of storage inside the camera with no subscription and no base station.

One thing to know before you choose it. The L40 has no solar panel, and eufy states it is not compatible with their separate solar panel accessory either. That means recharging it by cable roughly three times a year. If that does not suit you, the SoloCam S40 is the same camera with a solar panel built in.

600 lumens, and what that buys you

The spotlight is the reason to choose a spotlight security camera over a plain one. This one puts out 600 lumens, adjustable in brightness and in colour from a warm 4,000 K to a cold 6,000 K, and it is what turns night footage from infrared grey into full colour.

On a driveway or a yard gate it doubles as a security light that happens to record, which for most people is two purchases collapsed into one.

Behind the light of a spotlight security camera

A 2K camera across a 135 degree view with 8x digital zoom. A PIR sensor watches for body heat rather than movement alone, so a branch waving in the wind does not set it off, and on-device AI picks out people.

You can set up to two activity zones, which is what you want if a busy road runs outside your wall. A 90 dB siren and two-way audio finish it.

The biggest battery in the range

13,400 mAh, rated at about four months per charge. Footage is kept on 8 GB inside the camera, encrypted, with no subscription and no base station.

As with the other SoloCams that storage is fixed. There is no card slot, so it holds the recent clips and overwrites the older ones.

The one thing to settle before choosing the L40

It has no solar panel, and eufy state it is not compatible with their separate solar panel accessory either. That means recharging it by cable roughly three times a year, up a ladder if it is mounted high.

If that does not suit you, the SoloCam S40 is the same idea with a panel built in. We would rather say so here than have you find out in six months.

L40 or S40

Same camera, same light. This one has the bigger battery and no solar; the S40 has a panel on top and never needs taking down. eufy list this as the T8123 at eufy.com.

Questions

Can I add a solar panel to it?

No. The L40 has no solar panel built in, and eufy states it is not compatible with their separate solar panel accessory either. You will recharge it by cable about three times a year. If you want solar, the SoloCam S40 is essentially this same camera with a panel built in.

Does it record in colour at night?

Yes. The 600 lumen spotlight switches on when motion is detected and gives you full colour footage. With the spotlight off it falls back to infrared black and white.

Do I need a memory card or a HomeBase?

Neither. The camera holds 8 GB of storage inside itself and there is no subscription. That storage is fixed, though, with no card slot and no way to expand it.

Will the spotlight annoy my neighbours?

You can adjust both how bright it is and how warm or cold the light looks, from 4,000 K to 6,000 K, and you can set up to two activity zones so it only reacts to the parts of the view you care about.

Will it work on 5GHz Wi-Fi?

No. It connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
