About this product

A solar wifi camera, and the cheapest way to stop thinking about charging. A solar panel is built into the top of this camera, and with roughly three hours of direct sun a day it keeps its own battery topped up indefinitely. Without any sun at all a full charge lasts about three months.

It records 2K through an f/1.6 lens across a 135° view. A PIR sensor watches for body heat rather than movement alone, which is what stops a swaying tree filling your phone with alerts, and you can set up to two activity zones to narrow it further. Two-way audio lets you talk to whoever is there.

Footage is kept on 8 GB of storage inside the camera, so there is no subscription and no base station needed. If you already own a eufy HomeBase 3 you can add the camera to it and gain face recognition, but that is optional.

Where it sits in the range. The S220 is the budget solar model, and it is honest about it: there is no spotlight, so night footage is infrared black and white rather than colour, and the siren is 75 dB where the L40 and S40 manage 90 dB. If you want colour at night, look at the S40 or the S340.

Three hours of sun and you can forget it

A panel is built into the top, 0.9 W, and roughly three hours of direct sun a day keeps the 6,500 mAh battery topped up indefinitely. With no sun at all a full charge lasts about three months.

That is the whole argument for a solar wifi camera over a plain battery one: the ladder trip stops happening.

What a solar wifi camera of this size records

2K through an f/1.6 lens across a 135 degree view. A PIR sensor watches for body heat rather than movement alone, which is what stops a swaying tree filling your phone with alerts, and up to two activity zones narrow it further. Two-way audio lets you talk to whoever is standing there.

Storage, and the optional HomeBase

8 GB inside the camera, so no subscription and no base station needed. There is no card slot, so it keeps recent clips and writes over older ones.

If you already own a eufy HomeBase 3 you can add this camera to it and gain face recognition. That is optional, not a requirement, and it is not worth buying a HomeBase for on its own.

Where the S220 gives ground

It is the budget model in the solar range and it is honest about it. There is no spotlight, so night footage is infrared black and white rather than colour. The siren is 75 dB where the L40 and S40 manage 90.

If colour at night matters, the S40 or the S340 are the ones to look at, and both cost more for exactly that reason.

Outdoors

IP67 rated, charged over USB-C at 5V 2A if you ever need to, on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

Cheapest solar, or the better one

The S220 is the least you can spend and still stop charging. The S40 adds a 600 lumen spotlight and colour night footage; the S340 adds a moving head and two lenses. eufy list this as the T8134 at eufy.com.

Questions

Will it really never need charging?

In Dar es Salaam, most likely not. Around three hours of direct sunlight a day is enough for the built-in panel to keep pace with what the camera uses. Somewhere shaded, a full charge lasts about three months before you need a cable.

Does it see in colour at night?

No. The S220 has no spotlight, so night footage is infrared black and white. If colour at night matters to you, the SoloCam S40 or the S340 have spotlights and this one does not.

Do I need a memory card or a HomeBase?

Neither. It keeps footage on 8 GB of storage inside the camera and there is no subscription. There is no card slot. If you already own a eufy HomeBase 3 you can add it for face recognition, but it is not needed.

How loud is the siren?

It is 75 dB, which is noticeable but noticeably quieter than the 90 dB siren on the L40 and S40. Worth knowing if the siren is a big part of why you are buying.

Will it work on 5GHz Wi-Fi?

No. It connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
