The Philips Hue White bulb starts on Bluetooth
The Philips Hue White bulb has both radios in it. Out of the box, Bluetooth lets your phone control it while you are in the room, with no Bridge and nothing else bought.
Add a Hue Bridge later and the same bulb moves onto Zigbee: schedules, control from outside the house, Alexa, Google and Siri, and scenes that span several rooms at once. Nothing is wasted in the upgrade, which is why starting here is a safe way in.
Dimming that a wall dimmer cannot match
An ordinary bulb on a wall dimmer starts buzzing and flickering somewhere near the bottom of the range, and often will not go below about twenty per cent at all.
This one dims smoothly the whole way down from the app, because the dimming happens inside the bulb rather than by chopping up the mains supply. For a bedroom that is the difference between a light you can use at night and one you cannot.
What it does not do
Warm white at 2700K, and only that. There is no colour and no adjustable white temperature on this bulb.
If you want the light to shift from cool daylight in the morning to amber in the evening, that is the White Ambiance bulb. If you want colour, that is the Colour bulb. All three take the same E27 holder, so they are interchangeable in the same fitting.
Fitting and lifespan
Standard E27 screw, 60mm across and 110mm tall, which fits the great majority of pendant and lamp holders sold here. 220 to 240V, so no transformer or adapter is involved.
806 lumens is roughly what people expect from an old 60W incandescent, drawn from 9W. Rated for 25,000 hours and 50,000 switch cycles, and it reaches full brightness the moment it is switched on rather than warming up.
Why start with this one
It is the cheapest bulb in the Hue range and it behaves exactly like the expensive ones in every respect except colour. If you are testing whether smart lighting is worth it in your house, buy one of these for the room you use most rather than committing to a full set.

Questions
Do I need a Hue Bridge?
Not to begin with. This bulb has Bluetooth, so the Hue app on your phone controls it directly while you are in the room. A Bridge adds control from outside the house, schedules and voice control when you want them.
What is the difference between this and the colour bulb?
This one is warm white only, at a fixed 2700 K. The colour bulb changes to any of 16 million colours and across the full white range. If you only ever wanted a light you can dim and schedule, this is the one to buy.
Can I dim it?
Yes, right down to a low glow, from the app or by voice. Leave the wall switch on and do the dimming in the app. It is not meant for a wall dimmer.
Will it fit my lamp?
E27 is the common large screw fitting, so it goes into most pendants, table lamps and holders here without an adapter.
How bright is 806 lumens in real terms?
About the same light as an old 60 W incandescent bulb, for 9 W of electricity.
