Philips Hue White Ambience

Philips Hue White Ambiance is the tunable white bulb. Same E27 fitting and same 806 lumens as the plain white one, but the colour of the light moves the whole way from candle warm to cool daylight.

What the Philips Hue White Ambiance range looks like

At 6500K the light reads as overcast daylight: slightly blue, sharp, and the colour a room wants at seven in the morning. At 2200K it is candle amber, close to a filament lamp turned right down.

Everything in between is available, so the same fitting can be a working light at eight and a sitting-room light at eight in the evening without anybody changing a bulb.

The four presets, and why they are there

Philips build four recipes into the app: Energize, Concentrate, Read and Relax. Each is a colour temperature and a brightness chosen together.

They exist because most people do not want to hunt through a temperature slider every time. Tap Relax at nine in the evening and the room changes. It is the difference between a feature you use daily and one you demonstrate once to a visitor.

Bluetooth now, Bridge later

Both radios are in the bulb. Bluetooth works from your phone while you are in the room, with nothing else bought, which is enough for a bedside lamp or a desk.

Add a Hue Bridge and the same bulb gains schedules, control from outside the house, Alexa, Google and Siri, and scenes across several rooms. That is when a routine like waking to cool white and dimming to amber at bedtime becomes automatic rather than manual.

Whites only, and what that rules out

There is no colour in this bulb. Red, green and blue are not part of what it does, and nothing in the app will make it produce them.

If you want colour scenes, party lighting or a lamp that matches what is on the television, take the Hue Colour bulb instead. If a fixed warm white is all a room needs, the plain White bulb costs less and is the honest choice.

Where tunable white earns its place

Bedrooms and studies, mostly. A bedroom benefits because the light can drop to 2200K in the evening without the room going dark, and a study or a home office benefits because 6500K genuinely helps at a desk in a room with poor daylight.

A corridor or a store room does not need it. Same E27 fitting, same 806 lumens, so you can mix these with plain White bulbs around the house and only pay the difference where it does something. Philips list the range at philips-hue.com.
