The Hue Phoenix recessed spot has no bulb in it
The Hue Phoenix recessed spot has its LED built into the fitting, so there is nothing to change and nothing hanging below the ceiling line. It drops into a 12.5cm cut out and sits flush behind a slim white trim measuring 14 by 14cm.
Recess depth is 6.9cm, which is the figure to check against your ceiling void before anything is ordered. In a concrete slab with a suspended ceiling below it, that is usually fine; in a tight plasterboard box it may not be.
Tunable white, and why a bathroom wants it
It runs the full white ambiance range, tuning from candle warm through to cool daylight and dimming the whole way down.
In a bathroom that is the useful part. Bright neutral white over a mirror at seven in the morning, and a low warm glow at two in the morning that does not wake the whole house or leave anybody blinking. One fitting, two completely different rooms.
Read this before you choose a position
It is rated IP20, which means no water protection at all. Despite the name, this is not a fitting to put inside a shower enclosure or in the zone directly above a bath.
Keep it over the dry part of the room, and let an electrician decide the position against the wiring regulations rather than choosing it yourself from a ceiling plan. This is not a detail to guess at in a wet room.
Installation and control
It is wired into the ceiling at 220 to 240V, so it is an electrician job rather than a screw-in bulb swap. Rated for 20,000 hours, drawing 7W.
It needs a Philips Hue Bridge. Once that is on your router the spot answers to the Hue app, Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home, and can run on a schedule.
One published figure that disagrees with itself
Philips publish the white range as 2200K to 6500K in one place and 2200K to 6700K in another. We record both rather than picking the more flattering one. The difference is not visible to the eye, but we would rather you had the actual position.
Whites only, incidentally. There is no colour in this fitting. If you want colour in a ceiling, that is a different Hue product entirely, and for a room where a bulb will do, the White Ambiance bulb gives you the same tuning range for far less. Philips list the range at philips-hue.com.

Questions
Can it go in a bathroom?
Yes, in the dry part of the ceiling. It is rated IP20, which means it has no protection against water, so it must not sit over the shower or directly above the bath. Your electrician will know the zone rules; tell them IP20 and they will place it correctly.
Does it change colour?
It is whites only, from 2200 K candle warm right up to 6500 K cool daylight, and it dims. For reds, blues and greens you want the colour bulbs instead.
What size hole does it need?
A 12.5 cm cut out, with 6.9 cm of clear space above the ceiling for the body. The visible trim is 14 cm across, so it covers a slightly rough cut.
Is there a bulb to replace?
No. The LED is built into the fitting, rated at 20,000 hours.
Do I need a Hue Bridge?
Yes. We sell the Bridge, so ask us and we will match the two.
Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight.
