The Nanoleaf hexagon starter kit makes any shape
The Nanoleaf hexagon starter kit is nine hexagonal panels that clip together edge to edge. Each is 230mm across and 200mm tall, and about 6mm thick once mounted, so the arrangement sits almost flat against the wall.
There is no fixed layout. The panels connect at any edge, so the same nine make a honeycomb block, a diagonal run, a spiral or a shape that follows a staircase. Plan it on the floor first, because the mounting tape is easier to place than to remove.
Each panel lights independently
That is what makes the kit worth more than a strip. A pattern can run across the whole arrangement, panel by panel, rather than every panel showing the same colour.
100 lumens per panel, so nine of them together is a genuine light source as well as a decoration. The app carries scenes, rhythm modes that move with music, and screen mirroring that picks colour off a monitor.
Touch to control, no phone required
Tap a panel and it responds. That sounds like a novelty until the alternative is finding a phone every time somebody wants the lights off.
Anyone in the room can use them, including a guest or a child, without being added to an account first. The app is for setting scenes; the wall is for switching them.
No hub, and Matter built in
There is nothing else to buy. The panels carry Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a built-in Thread border router, and they are Matter certified.
So they work with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and SmartThings out of the box, and the Thread router in them helps other Thread devices in the house reach the network. Note the Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz only, so split your bands if the router broadcasts one name.
Growing the kit later
One power supply carries up to 21 hexagons, so this nine-panel kit has room to more than double before anything else is needed. One controller handles up to 500 panels, which nobody will reach.
Buy expansion packs rather than a second starter kit when you extend, because a second kit means a second supply and controller you do not need. IP20, so indoors only. If you want colour on a wall without mounting panels, our RGBIC strip is the simpler option. Nanoleaf publish the range at nanoleaf.me.

Questions
Do I need a hub?
No. The panels carry Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a Thread border router of their own, and they are Matter certified, so Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings all connect without extra hardware.
Can I add more panels later?
Yes. One power supply runs up to 21 hexagons, so this nine panel kit has plenty of room to grow before you need anything else.
How do they stick to the wall?
Mounting plates with adhesive tape are in the box. They hold well on clean, smooth, dry paint. Textured or freshly painted walls are where adhesive lets go, so wipe the surface down and let new paint cure first.
Does it need 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
No, and it will not use it. Nanoleaf panels join the 2.4 GHz band only, so if your router combines both under one name you may need to split them.
Can I take the shape apart and rearrange it?
Yes. The panels link edge to edge with the linkers supplied, so the layout can be changed. Keep the mounting plates and buy replacement tape when you move them.
