About this product

The Homey smart home hub is a white sphere with a colour-changing ring that speaks almost every wireless language a house uses. Most hubs handle one protocol and leave you buying a second box for everything else. This one carries seven radios in one.

Plug it in, connect the ethernet, and it is yours.

Flows are the reason to own a Homey smart home hub

Drag a trigger, a condition and an action together and you have an automation. When the doorbell rings, turn on the hallway light. When the alarm is disarmed, start the music. When everyone leaves, shut the house down.

No code is involved, and the devices in a Flow do not have to be from the same brand or even speak the same radio protocol. That is the trick a single-protocol hub cannot do, however good its app is.

Seven radios, and the ones that matter here

Zigbee, Z-Wave Plus, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared, 433MHz and 868MHz, plus NFC.

Infrared is the one worth pointing out in Dar. It is what brings an air conditioner or a television that has only ever answered a plastic remote into the same automations as everything else. The 433MHz radio matters for the older remote-control sockets that are still in a lot of houses here.

Talking to it, and reaching it from outside

There is a microphone in the sphere, so you can speak to Homey directly without any other hardware. It also bridges to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, which is how devices with no voice control of their own end up answering to voice.

The app is free on iPhone and Android and reaches the hub from anywhere. The colour ring on the sphere gives you status across the room without opening anything.

Local processing, and no subscription

Everything runs on the sphere itself. Automations keep working through an internet outage, because nothing has to travel to a server and back for a light to come on.

There is no monthly fee attached to any of it, which over the life of a hub is a larger difference than the purchase price.

This one, or one of the Pros

The standard Homey is the entry point: a single-core processor with 512MB of RAM, an ethernet port built in, and the same seven radios and the same Flows as its bigger siblings. For a normal house with a normal number of devices it is enough.

Where it runs out is scale. Once a house has a hundred devices and dozens of Flows evaluating at once, the Homey Pro 2019 has twice the processor and twice the memory for exactly that. And if you are buying into Matter and Thread rather than just what exists today, the Homey Pro 2023 is the only one of the three that speaks them. Athom's product page is at homey.app.

Questions

What does having seven radios actually get me?

It means you are not buying a second hub later. Zigbee reaches Philips Hue and similar lights, Z-Wave reaches sensors and relays, 433 MHz reaches the cheap remote sockets, infrared reaches your air conditioner and television, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi cover the rest. All of them appear in one app and can be used in the same automation.

What is a Flow?

Homey's way of making devices work together, built by dragging a trigger, a condition and an action into a row. When the doorbell rings, turn on the hallway light. When everyone leaves, switch everything off. No code, and it works across brands that were never designed to talk to each other.

Is there a monthly fee?

No. Everything runs on the sphere in your house. Homey do sell a separate cloud-based service, but this is the local hub and it carries no subscription.

Can I talk to it?

Yes, in two ways. There is a microphone in the sphere itself, and it also connects to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, which lets you use voice on devices that have no voice control of their own.

How does it connect to my network?

There is an ethernet port on the sphere, which is the steadier option, and Wi-Fi if running a cable is not practical.
