About this product

The ER14250 battery is the half AA cell that runs Fibaro door sensors. Lithium thionyl chloride, 3.6 volts, 1200 mAh. It is the size of half an AA and it is not interchangeable with an AA or a AAA.

What an ER14250 battery is, and what it is not

It is a half AA. Physically half the length of an AA cell, 3.6 volts rather than 1.5, and it will not substitute for an AA, a AAA or anything else in the drawer. Devices that take one are designed around it, and putting a rechargeable or an alkaline of roughly similar size into the holder does not work. There is no equivalent to reach for, so a spare is the only answer.

Lithium thionyl chloride, for years of nothing

This chemistry is used where a device draws almost nothing for a very long time: utility meters, smoke detectors, fire alarms and contact sensors. It holds its voltage nearly flat for most of its life and barely self discharges, which is what allows a door sensor to be rated in years rather than months. It is also why the sensor keeps working right up until it stops.

Which of ours take one

The Fibaro door sensor, the Aeotec door sensor and Fibaro The Button. If your house runs on Z-Wave contacts, this is the cell to keep two of.

Nothing about a roof space troubles it

It works from -55 to 80 degrees Celsius, which is a wider range than any part of a building here will ever ask for. It is not rechargeable, and it is RoHS and UN 38.3 compliant with UL and IEC certification.

The specification

3.6 volts, 1200 mAh, half AA size. Brand varies between deliveries and the specification does not.

Because these last for years, the moment a sensor finally goes quiet is usually long after anybody remembers what it takes. Write the cell type on a label inside the sensor cover, or keep a note with the spares. It sounds fussy and it saves an evening of taking a sensor apart to read a number off a battery.

Do not confuse it with the CR123A, which is a different size and voltage and runs the Fibaro sensors that are not contacts; that one is the CR123A. Wikipedia keeps a list of battery sizes including the half AA.

Questions

Can I use an AA battery instead?

No. This is a half AA at 3.6 volts. An AA is 1.5 volts and the wrong size.

Which devices take this one?

The Fibaro Door Sensor, the Aeotec Door Sensor 7 and the Fibaro Button, plus meters, smoke detectors and fire alarms.

Is it rechargeable?

No. It is a single use lithium cell.

Will the brand be the one shown?

Usually. Stock moves and the brand can change between deliveries, but the size, voltage, capacity and chemistry are always the same.

How long does it last in a door sensor?

These cells are chosen for very low drain devices and typically run for a long time. It depends on how often the door is opened and how often the sensor reports.
