About this product
The Hue Dimmer Switch is four buttons on a magnetic wall plate: on and scenes, brighter, dimmer, off. It works straight out of the box without a Hue Bridge, holding up to 10 Hue lights, so a room can be dimmed the day it is unpacked.

The Hue Dimmer Switch works before you own a Bridge
Out of the box, with no Bridge and no app, it holds up to 10 Hue lights and dims them. That is unusual and it matters: buy a few Hue bulbs and this, and the room is dimmable the afternoon it arrives, with no account made and nothing configured. Most smart lighting asks you to buy a hub before anything works at all.
It lifts off the plate, and that is the whole design
The wall plate is magnetic. The dimmer sits on it by the door in the evening and comes off into your hand for the sofa afterwards, then goes back on the wall so nobody loses it down the side of a cushion. It is the answer to the oldest problem with remote controls, and it is why this gets used where a loose remote gets lost.
What a Bridge adds later
Up to 50 lights instead of 10. Named scenes fired by repeated presses of the top button, so one button cycles through the moods you have set. Schedules. And every button reassignable in the Hue app. So the switch you bought to dim one room grows into the controller for the whole system without being replaced.
Fitting, if you can call it that
Screws or the adhesive pad, and that is the entire job. No wiring, no back box, no electrician, nothing cut into a wall. It goes on a glass partition, on tiles, in a rented flat, or beside the bed on the side that never had a switch. One CR2032 runs it and Philips rate that at two years.
What it controls
Hue lamps: the Hue White for a passage, the Hue White Ambiance for warm dimming, or the Hue Color. For scenes, schedules and more than ten lamps you will want the Hue Bridge.

Do I need the Hue Bridge?
Not to dim. Out of the box it holds up to 10 Hue lights on its own. Add a Bridge and it runs up to 50, with scenes, schedules and every button reassignable.
Does it come off the wall?
Yes. The plate mounts on the wall and the dimmer lifts off it, so you can carry it to the sofa.
Does it need wiring?
No. It runs on a battery and sticks or screws to the wall. There is no back box and no electrician.
What battery does it take?
One CR2032. Philips rate it at two years.
How do I get scenes?
