About this product

The Lightwave Link Plus hub is what makes a Lightwave system work. It plugs into your router with the supplied cable, and from that point the lighting, the heating and the power sockets all answer to your phone from anywhere.

Lightwave devices talk on 868MHz rather than Wi-Fi. That radio reaches roughly 100 metres through a typical house and considerably further in the open, which is a different order of coverage from a 2.4GHz signal fighting its way through concrete walls.

In a Dar compound with a main house, an annexe and a gate, that range is the whole argument. Switches at the far end stay in contact, and they respond in a fraction of a second whether you are at home or abroad.

It works with both generations of Lightwave kit

The current Smart Series talks back to the hub, which is what gives you real status in the app rather than a guess, and on the sockets that support it, energy monitoring, so you can see what is actually drawing power.

Older Connect Series devices are supported too. If a house already has Lightwave in the walls, that installation carries over rather than being ripped out.

Lighting, heating and sockets in one app

The whole Lightwave range answers to it: the dimmers and switches, the heating, and the power sockets. Hundreds of devices on one hub, which is more than a domestic installation will reach.

Because it is one system rather than three, a single scene can dim the lounge, set the heating back and cut power to the sockets you want off overnight.

Voice, and which parts Siri reaches

It works with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. HomeKit covers the Smart Series and the heating devices, so Siri runs the lights and the heating from an iPhone.

Alexa and Google Assistant work across the range. In a mixed household that combination means nobody has to change phones to turn a light on.

What it needs to work

An ethernet port on your router, and the cable is supplied. Power comes from the adapter in the box. Setup is plugging it in and following the app.

It needs an internet connection to reach you when you are out, which is worth knowing if your line drops often. Lightwave publish the range at lightwaverf.com, and if you want a hub that runs several protocols rather than one brand, the Homey hub is the alternative to look at.

Questions

Do I need this to use Lightwave switches?

For anything beyond the switch on the wall, yes. Without the hub a Lightwave switch works by hand and by its own remote. The hub is what adds the app, schedules, control from outside the house and voice.

Will it work with the Lightwave kit I already have?

Yes. It supports both the current Smart Series and the older Connect Series, so an existing installation carries over rather than being replaced. Smart Series devices additionally report their status back, which is what enables energy monitoring on the sockets that have it.

Does it work with Apple HomeKit?

Yes, for the Smart Series and the heating devices, so Siri and the Apple Home app can run them. It also works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

How does it connect?

By ethernet cable to your router, and the cable is in the box. A wired hub is steadier than a wireless one, which matters for something the whole house depends on.

How far does the signal reach?

About 100 metres inside a typical house and considerably further with a clear line of sight. That is well beyond Wi-Fi and it is the reason Lightwave use their own radio rather than putting every switch on your router.
