About this product

A Raspberry Pi 4 8GB starter kit in a heavy aluminium case, and the one to take if you already have memory cards in a drawer. It is the full 8GB Model B, the top of the Pi 4 range, in black anodised alloy with a fan already fitted.

Read this first: no memory card is included

This is the basic kit. You supply a microSD card and write Raspberry Pi OS to it yourself, which is a free download and a few minutes with the Raspberry Pi Imager.

That is the trade, and it is the right one if you already have cards in a drawer. If you would rather it arrived ready to boot, our clear-case Complete Kit includes a 64GB card already imaged, or ask us and we will add a card to this one instead.

Why this Raspberry Pi 4 8GB starter kit uses an alloy case

A Pi 4 under sustained load throttles itself back when it gets hot, and in Dar it gets hot faster than it does in the places these kits are designed. The black anodised alloy case draws heat off the board through the whole shell rather than trapping it the way plastic does.

A fan is already fitted, and a set of heatsinks with thermal pads goes on the hot chips as well. That combination is what keeps it at full speed running something around the clock.

What 8GB of RAM is actually enough for

This is the top of the Pi 4 range. It will comfortably run Home Assistant for a whole house of devices, a Pi-hole filtering adverts for the entire network, a media server, a print server for a printer with no Wi-Fi of its own, or a retro games machine.

Several of those at once, in fact, which is where the 8GB earns its money over the 2GB and 4GB boards.

Ports and connections

Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0. Gigabit ethernet plus dual-band Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5GHz, and Bluetooth 5.0. Two micro HDMI outputs driving two 4K screens at 60Hz.

The 40-pin GPIO header is there for anyone wiring something up to it. Power is 5V 3A over USB-C, and the supply in the box has an inline on/off switch, which is a small thing you will appreciate the first time you need to restart it.

What else you will need

A microSD card, and a keyboard, mouse and monitor for the initial setup. None of those are in the box. A micro HDMI adapter, a neoprene storage bag and a quick start guide are.

If you would rather skip the imaging step entirely, the clear-case Complete Kit is the same 8GB board with a 64GB card already loaded with Raspberry Pi OS and a USB card reader included. Vilros list their Pi 4 kits at vilros.com.

Questions

Does it come with a memory card?

No. This is the basic kit, so you supply your own microSD card and write Raspberry Pi OS to it, which is a free download and a few minutes with the Raspberry Pi Imager. If you would rather it arrived ready to boot, our clear-case Complete Kit includes a 64 GB card already imaged. We can also add a card to this kit, just ask.

Why the aluminium case?

Heat. Alloy pulls warmth off the board through the whole shell instead of trapping it, the fitted fan moves it out, and the heatsinks handle the hottest chips. A Pi 4 that cannot shed heat quietly slows itself down, and this kit is built so it does not have to.

What can I do with it?

With 8 GB of RAM, a lot. Home Assistant for a whole house, Pi-hole filtering adverts across the network, a media server, a print server for an old printer, a retro games machine, or a small desktop. It is a real computer in a very small box.

What else do I need?

A microSD card, and a keyboard, mouse and monitor if you want to use it as a desktop. Running it headless as a server needs none of those, just the card and the network.

How do I connect a screen?

Through the micro HDMI adapter in the box, into any normal monitor or television. The board has two micro HDMI outputs and will drive two screens at once, up to 4K each.
