Where the Ring Video Doorbell Satin Nickel looks right

This is the Ring Video Doorbell Satin Nickel finish: a light brushed silver-grey. It sits properly against aluminium window frames, white or pale door frames, and the grey powder-coated gates that go on most newer builds here.

The hardware is identical to the bronze version. Nothing is different but the faceplate, so choose on what your door frame looks like rather than on anything technical.

What works out of the box, and what Ring charges for

Free, forever, with nothing to buy: live view whenever you open the app, doorbell and motion alerts, two-way talk, motion zones, and live view through an Alexa device.

Recorded video is not free. A Ring Protect plan, bought separately from Ring, is what saves clips, keeps video history, adds snapshots between events and filters person and package alerts. Without it the doorbell tells you somebody is there but keeps nothing afterwards. That is the honest trade against a eufy doorbell, which records to a base station in your house with no fee at all.

Motion zones, so the road stops waking you

A gate on a Dar street sees traffic all day. Motion zones let you draw the area the doorbell actually watches, so a person at the gate raises an alert and a dala dala going past does not.

Night vision is infrared, and the doorbell joins 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Ring ask for at least 2Mbps of upload for video that does not stutter, which is worth checking against your line before you order.

Putting it up

A screwdriver job. The bracket, the screws and the tools are all in the box, it goes on a door frame or a wall in a few minutes, and the rest is done in the Ring app.

If the house happens to have doorbell wiring at 8 to 24 volts AC you can wire it in permanently. Otherwise it runs on its built-in rechargeable battery and you charge it by cable.

One thing most buyers add straight away

By default your phone is the only thing that rings. If the phone is charging in the bedroom or sitting on silent, nobody in the house knows anyone is at the door.
