How the Philips Hue Smart Plug adopts a lamp
Plug the lamp into a Philips Hue Smart Plug and the lamp appears in the Hue app beside your Hue bulbs. It switches with them, joins the same scenes, and follows the same routines.
That is the point of it. A standard lamp with a shade you like, a floor lamp with an odd fitting, a string of lights with a plug on the end: none of those can take a Hue bulb, and all of them can go on this.
It works out of the box over Bluetooth
No bridge, no hub, no wiring. Install the Hue Bluetooth app, stand in the room, and it is yours in a couple of minutes.
That makes it the easiest first Hue purchase there is, and for a lot of people it is the whole product. You are not committing to a system, you are switching one lamp.
The Bridge changes what it can do
Bluetooth only reaches from inside the room. On its own you cannot switch the lamp from work, and you cannot run it on a schedule while you are away.
Add the Hue Bridge and it changes character: control from anywhere, automations and timers, and Alexa and Google Assistant. If the reason you want it is a lamp that comes on while the house is empty, budget for both.
It switches, it does not dim
A plug cuts power on and off. An ordinary lamp plugged into it gets on and off, and nothing more.
Dimming and colour come from the bulb, not the plug. If you want that lamp dimmable, put a Hue bulb in it as well, and then the plug becomes the way you switch power to a lamp that already dims properly.
What it will run
Rated to 3120W, which is far more than any lamp needs, so a fan or a heater is fine on it too. Input is 220 to 240V, and it carries both Bluetooth and Zigbee radios, so nothing has to be replaced when you add a Bridge later.
It is 64 x 60 x 60mm and 110g, with a two year Philips warranty. If you want a plug that works from anywhere with no bridge at all, a Wi-Fi smart plug does that for less, though it will not join your Hue scenes. Philips publish the range at philips-hue.com.

Questions
Do I need the Hue Bridge?
Not to use it. Over Bluetooth you can switch the lamp from your phone whenever you are in the room, and that is enough for a bedside lamp. You need the Bridge for three things: switching it while you are out of the house, running it on a schedule, and voice control through Alexa or Google Assistant.
Will it dim my lamp?
No. It cuts the power on and off, so a normal bulb goes on and off. If you want that lamp to dim or change colour, put a Hue bulb in it, and then you can use the plug and the bulb together.
What can I plug into it besides a lamp?
Anything up to 3120 W. A fan, a heater, a kettle, a television. The reason it is sold as a lighting product is that it lands in the Hue app next to your bulbs, but the socket does not care what is in it.
Can I use it with my Hue bulbs in the same room?
Yes, and that is the point of it. It sits in the same app, in the same room, in the same scenes, so one tap or one voice command takes the Hue bulbs and the plugged-in lamp together.
Does it work with my existing Hue Bridge?
Yes. It speaks Zigbee as well as Bluetooth, so an existing Hue Bridge picks it up like any other Hue accessory.
