About this product
The Philips Hue Motion Sensor is a motion sensor for Hue lights with a daylight sensor built in, so the lamps only come on when the room is actually dark. Walk in and the light is there. Leave, and after a delay you set, it goes off again.

What the Philips Hue Motion Sensor does that a plain PIR cannot
It reads daylight as well as movement. A bare motion sensor will happily switch a lamp on at two in the afternoon because somebody walked past a window, and you spend the next month wondering why the bulbs keep dying. This one only acts when the room is genuinely dark, which is the difference between automatic lighting that people leave switched on and automatic lighting that gets ripped out after a fortnight.
The time of day rule is the real reason to buy it
The same sensor, the same doorway, two behaviours. Bright at seven in the evening when the family is moving around. A dim warm glow at two in the morning, enough to find the bathroom and not enough to wake anybody or to leave you blinking. That single rule is what converts people to smart lighting, and it is set up in the Hue app in about a minute.
Where it goes
Stand it on a shelf or put it on a wall with the magnetic plate, which lets you aim it and re-aim it without tools. Two AAA cells run it for at least two years by Philips figure, and there is nothing to wire. It is rated IP42, so it is an indoor sensor: a covered veranda is fine, an exposed one is not.
It talks to the Bridge, not to the lights
The sensor reports to the Hue Bridge and the Bridge decides which lamps move. That is worth understanding because it means the rule survives your phone being off, out of the house or out of battery. With the Bridge in place, the sensor and everything else on Hue also answers to Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit.
What you need with it
A Philips Hue Bridge, which is sold separately and is not optional for this sensor. After that, any Hue lamps you want it to drive: the Hue White for a passage, or the Hue White Ambiance if you want the warm dim setting at night.

Questions
Do I need a Hue Bridge?
Yes. Without the Bridge the sensor has nothing to talk to. The Bridge is sold separately.
Will it control lights that are not Hue?
Through the Bridge it controls Hue lights. If the Bridge is joined to a wider system such as HomeKit or a hub, the motion can be used there as a trigger for other things too.
What is the daylight sensor for?
So the light does not switch on at midday. You set a brightness level below which motion is allowed to turn the lamp on.
Can it be dim at night and bright in the evening?
Yes. The Hue app lets you set different scenes for different times of day on the same sensor.
Where does it go?
A corner or a wall at head height, aimed across the space you walk through. It is indoor rated, IP42, so keep it out of the rain.
