About this product

The Fibaro Smoke Sensor is a Z-Wave smoke detector small enough that it does not announce itself on the ceiling. It reacts to smoke and to a sudden rise in temperature, and it tells the hub, which is what makes it different from a stand alone alarm that only screams into an empty house.

A Z-Wave hub is required.

What a Fibaro Smoke Sensor adds to an ordinary alarm

A stand alone smoke alarm sounds where it is fitted. If the house is empty, or you are upstairs with the fan on, or you are out of the country, that is the whole of what happens. This one tells the hub, and the hub can do the rest: lights on along the escape route, a plug switched off, a siren sounded in a different part of the house, and a message on your phone wherever you are. The detection is the same job; the difference is who finds out.

Smoke, and a sudden rise in temperature

It watches for both. Smoke is the usual signal, but a fast temperature rise catches the fires that produce heat before they produce visible smoke, and it gives a second reading that the hub can act on. Two signals from one device on the ceiling.

Adjustable sensitivity, which matters in a kitchen

The nuisance alarm is what makes people take the battery out, and a battery on the kitchen table protects nobody. Sensitivity is adjustable here, so a detector near a cooker can be set to tolerate frying without being useless. Set it once, properly, and leave it in place.

The event memory

The back box records what happened, so after an incident there is something to read rather than a guess. For a rented property, an office or anywhere an insurer or a landlord will ask questions, a record beats a recollection.

Fitting and what it needs

It fixes to the ceiling or a wall on the supplied plate and runs on a CR123A cell. The body is 65 by 65 by 28 mm, which is small enough that it does not dominate a ceiling.

It is a Z-Wave device and needs a hub. Three controllers on our shelves run it: the Fibaro Home Center Lite, the Fibaro Home Center 2 and the Homey Pro. To have it sound elsewhere in the house, add the Aeotec Siren. Fibaro publish it at fibaro.com.

Questions

Do I need a hub?

Yes. It reports over Z-Wave, so a Z-Wave controller has to be on site. Without one it will still sound locally but nothing else will happen.

Will it go off every time I cook?

Sensitivity is adjustable, and the usual answer is not to put a smoke sensor directly over the stove. Fit it a few metres away and set the sensitivity down if it is still triggered by frying.

Can it turn things on when it detects smoke?

The hub can. Lights on, a plug switched off, another siren sounded, a push notification sent. The sensor reports and the hub decides.

Where should it go?

On the ceiling, near the middle of the room, away from vents and from the stove itself.

What is the back box memory?

A record kept in the sensor of what it saw, so an event can be looked at afterwards rather than reconstructed from memory.
