About this product

The budget end of the doorbell shelf. This Tuya video doorbell runs on a battery, comes with a plug-in chime, sticks to the door frame with no wiring at all, and lets you see and talk to whoever is at the gate from your phone.

The Tuya video doorbell goes straight onto your Wi-Fi

The Tuya video doorbell joins your router directly. There is no gateway to buy and nothing extra to plug in, which is the main reason to take this over a Zigbee doorbell kit.

It runs in the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app, the same one that already drives a lot of the switches and sensors on our shelves, so if you own any of those it lands in a house you have already set up rather than starting a second app.

166 degrees, which is wider than most

The lens covers 166 degrees, well past the 120 to 155 degrees that most doorbells manage. On a narrow gate or a doorway set into a wall, that extra width is the difference between seeing somebody standing to one side and not knowing they were there.

Video is 1080p, motion comes from a passive infrared sensor that sends an alert with a snapshot, and two-way audio has noise cancellation on it. An Alexa Echo Show can announce the door and put the picture on screen.

The card goes in the doorbell, not the chime

This catches people out, because the chime looks like the part that should hold the storage. It does not. It only rings.

The card is not included. Our supplier gives the maximum as 64GB. Every comparable doorbell of this design takes 128GB, so the real ceiling may well be higher, but 64GB is the figure we can stand behind and it holds a great deal of doorbell footage. Ask us before buying a larger card and we will test one.

About the cloud plan, honestly

Everything worth having works with no subscription: live view, two-way talk, notifications, the chime ringing, and recording to the card. There is a Tuya cloud plan on top for off-site backup, with a free trial.

We have not been able to establish what the paid plan costs or whether it can be bought from Tanzania at all, so do not buy this expecting the cloud to be part of it. The card in the doorbell is the storage you can count on.

Two limits worth knowing before you buy

It is battery only and cannot be hardwired. The battery is around 6,000mAh and the manufacturer quotes roughly six months on standby, which on a busy gate means noticeably less.

And this is unbranded white-label hardware. We could not find a manufacturer datasheet, so where a figure is missing from the table below it is missing because nobody publishes it, not because we did not look. The weather rating is one of those gaps. If you want a doorbell with a published IP rating and a manufacturer behind it, the eufy C210 is the next step up and also comes with a chime. The app this one runs on is documented at tuya.com.

Questions

Do I need to buy a memory card?

Yes, and it goes in the doorbell itself rather than in the chime, which catches people out. Our supplier gives the maximum as 64 GB. Every comparable doorbell of this design takes 128 GB, so the real limit may be higher, but 64 GB is the figure we can stand behind and it holds plenty. Ask us before buying a bigger card and we will test one first.

Is there a subscription?

Not for anything that matters. Live view, two-way talk, notifications, the chime and recording to the memory card are all local and free. Tuya do sell a cloud backup plan with a free trial, but we have not been able to find out what it costs or whether it can be bought from Tanzania at all, so treat the card as your storage and the cloud as a maybe.

Do I need a hub?

No. It connects straight to your Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and runs through the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app, the same app a lot of our switches and sensors use. Nothing else to buy.

Can I wire it into my existing doorbell wiring?

No, this one is battery only. The battery is about 6,000 mAh and the manufacturer quotes roughly six months on standby, though a gate with a lot of traffic will need charging sooner than that. If you want a doorbell you can wire in, look at the eufy S220.

How does it compare to the eufy doorbells?

It is considerably cheaper and it does the basic job: see the caller, talk to them, keep a recording on a card. The eufy models give you a sharper picture, better detection that ignores the wind and the dog, a base station that stores everything, and a manufacturer with a datasheet behind it. This one is unbranded and some of its specifications are simply not published anywhere. If the budget is the deciding factor this is a reasonable buy, and we will say so.
