Be clear on this before you compare prices. This is the second generation, 2021, in glacier white. It has the same 8 inch screen and the same 13 megapixel auto framing camera as the newer one, and it does not have the Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub hardware that the 2024 model carries. Everything else is much the same. If a built in gateway is not part of your plan, this is the sensible buy; if it is, pay for the newer one.
The screen adapts its colour to the room
This is the feature that gets overlooked and is the reason to leave it on all day. The display shifts its white balance to match the light in the room, so a slideshow of photographs reads like prints on a shelf rather than a glowing tablet on a counter. In a house with a lot of daylight, that is the difference between a screen you display pictures on and one you leave blank.
Two 2 inch drivers, which is why it works as a radio
Two neodymium drivers with a passive bass radiator behind them. That is a proper little speaker rather than the single small driver in a Dot, and it is why an 8 inch screen ends up being the thing people leave the radio playing on all morning. The screen is the reason you buy it; the speaker is the reason it stays on the counter.
The camera and the shutter
13 megapixels with auto framing, so it keeps you in the picture while you move about on a call, and it pulls up compatible security cameras so the screen doubles as a monitor for the gate. There is a shutter you slide across the lens with a finger and a separate button that cuts the microphones electrically.
Which of the two
The 2024 Echo Show 8 in charcoal adds the Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub, which lets sensors and bulbs pair straight to the screen with no gateway. This 2nd generation one does not have that hardware. Same size, same camera resolution, different job in a smart home.
For a smaller screen, the Echo Show 5 in white. The display here is 1280 x 800. Wikipedia lists every Echo Show generation.

How is the sound?

Can I cover the camera?
