The Echo Show 5 White belongs on a kitchen counter
White is the colour that sits with a pale worktop, white tiles or a fridge door without looking like a piece of equipment somebody left out. And the kitchen is where a small screen earns its keep: a recipe you can read while your hands are covered, a timer counting down where you can see it from the hob, and the forecast at a glance while you decide whether the washing goes out.
Timers and lists, which is most of what it does
Say how long and watch it count down on the screen from across the room. Run several at once for several pans. Add to a shopping list while you notice the sugar is finished, and find that list on your phone at the shop. None of this is impressive on paper and all of it is what people actually use these for every day.
Video calls that work while you carry on
Call another Echo Show, or the Alexa app on somebody phone. Because the screen stands on the counter, a call to family abroad happens while you cook rather than instead of cooking, which is a different sort of conversation from one held holding a phone up.
The camera has a cover you slide
A physical shutter across the lens, not a setting, plus a separate button that cuts the microphones electrically. Worth knowing on any device with a camera in a room where people eat and talk. Pull up a compatible camera at the gate on the same screen when somebody knocks.
Which one to buy
The same screen in black is the one for a dark room or a bedside table. For a bigger screen with a Zigbee hub inside it, the Echo Show 8, and for a bedside device with no camera at all the Echo Spot.
The display is 5.5 inches, the camera 2 MP, the speaker front firing, and Wi-Fi dual band. Wikipedia has a comparison of the Show models.

Questions
Can I cover the camera?
Yes. There is a physical shutter you slide across the lens. It is a cover, not a software switch.
Can I see my security camera on it?
Yes, if the camera works with Alexa. Ask Alexa to show it and it appears on the screen.
Is it big enough to watch things on?
It is 5.5 inches, so it is a glance screen: weather, recipes, a video call, a camera feed. For watching, the Echo Show 8 is the one.
Can I use it as a bedside clock?
That is what it is best at. The clock face is personalisable and the screen dims in a dark room.
What plug does it come with?
Ask us before you order and we will tell you exactly which adapter is in the box you are buying.
Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight.
