Twelve figures land in the Wyze app each time you step on, and the app charts them over time, which is the part that tells you whether anything is actually changing.

Readings feed through to Apple Health and Google Fit, so the weight chart sits beside whatever else you already track.

Why the Wyze smart scale takes your heart rate

Most scales stop at weight and body fat. The Wyze smart scale also takes a heart rate, measured through your bare feet while you are already standing there, so it costs you nothing in time.

Taken at the same moment every morning, before coffee and before the day starts, a resting heart rate is one of the more honest numbers you can collect. It sits in the app beside the weight chart, and after a hard week of training it is usually the first figure that moves.

Step on anywhere

The electrodes run across the entire glass surface rather than sitting in four small pads. There is no lining your feet up on marked contacts and no shuffling around until it reads.

There is also nothing to tap or wake. Step on, wait a moment, step off, and the numbers are in the app.

Twelve figures, and what they are based on

Weight, body fat, BMI, muscle mass, bone mass, body water, lean body mass, visceral fat, protein, basal metabolic rate, metabolic age and heart rate.

Everything past weight and heart rate comes from bioelectrical impedance, a small current passing through your feet, so weigh barefoot with dry feet on a hard floor and at a consistent time of day. Read the trend the app charts rather than any single morning's figure, because that is where the useful information is.

Eight people, plus anyone passing through

It recognises up to eight people automatically and files each reading under the right person without anyone selecting a profile first.

Guest mode covers everybody else. A visitor can weigh themselves without their reading landing in somebody's history and skewing the chart.

Wyze or eufy

Take the Wyze if heart rate matters to you, or if the step-on-anywhere surface appeals. It handles eight recognised users plus guests, reads to the nearest 0.1lb, takes up to 180kg, and runs on four AAA batteries supplied in the box.

Take the eufy Smart Scale P1 if the household is bigger than eight people, or if you want the readings feeding into Fitbit as well as Apple Health and Google Fit. Neither needs a hub and neither has a subscription. Wyze publish the specification on their product page.
