The Apple HomePod is a speaker that happens to have Siri in it
A 4 inch high excursion woofer and five horn loaded tweeters, each with its own neodymium magnet, and an internal microphone that measures the bass in the cabinet and corrects it continuously. That is a loudspeaker engineering description, and the order matters: the audio was designed first and the assistant fitted around it. Two of them pair as a proper stereo set, left and right, rather than both playing the same thing.

Set up and control require an iPhone or another Apple device. There is no Android path, no web interface and no workaround. If the household runs on Android phones this is the wrong speaker and no amount of it being a good one changes that. We would rather say so plainly than have it come back.
The sensors do more than you would expect
Temperature and humidity are measured inside, so an automation in Home can start a fan or close the blinds when the room changes, with no separate sensor to buy. Sound Recognition listens for a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm and sends an alert to your phone while you are out, which quietly turns a set of ordinary dumb alarms into ones that can reach you.
It is the hub for an Apple Home
Thread and Matter are built in, so newer accessories join without a bridge, and the HomePod is what keeps automations running when your phone is not at home. If you were going to buy an Apple TV or another hub for that job, this covers it and plays music properly at the same time.
The practical details
Spatial audio with Dolby Atmos, four far field microphones for Siri, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, Thread and Ultra Wideband, which is what lets you hand a track over by holding an iPhone near the top. It runs on ordinary mains, 100 to 240 V, and it is 142 mm across, 168 mm high and 2.3 kg.
If the house is not on Apple, the Amazon Echo Studio is the comparable speaker on Alexa, and the Google Nest Hub is the equivalent on Google. Apple keep the specification at apple.com.

Questions
Will it work with an Android phone?
No. The HomePod is set up and controlled from an Apple device. If the house is on Android, look at the Echo or the Nest range instead.
Can I pair two of them?
Yes. Two HomePods pair as a stereo set, and they will also act as the sound system for an Apple TV.
What are the sensors for?
Temperature and humidity, read by the HomePod and used by automations in the Home app: start a fan, close the blinds, run the air conditioning.
What is Sound Recognition?
The HomePod listens for a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm going off and sends the alert to your phone, so you hear about it when you are not in the house.
Does it need a bridge for smart home accessories?
No. It is a home hub itself, with Thread and Matter built in.
