Aeotec NanoMote Quad

The Aeotec NanoMote Quad is a four button Z-Wave remote the size of a car key, 50 mm square and 25 g. Every button does two things, a tap and a press and hold, so four buttons give your hub eight separate scenes.

Four buttons, eight scenes on the Aeotec NanoMote

Every button reads two things: a tap and a press held down. That doubling is what turns a four button fob into eight separate instructions to your hub, and it is the difference between a remote that does the obvious four and one that also carries the goodnight scene, the gate and the outside lights. Nothing on the fob decides anything; the hub holds all eight rules and you edit them there.

The size is the reason it gets used

50 mm square, 14.5 mm thick, 25 grams. That is a car key rather than a remote control, so it lives on a keyring, in a pocket or in a handbag instead of on a table in the room you have just left. A scene controller that is never with you is a scene controller you stop using, and this is the one that solves that by being small enough to forget you are carrying.

S2 security, and why it matters on a remote

Z-Wave Plus with S2, so on a modern controller it joins the network encrypted rather than in the clear. On a device whose whole job is to unlock a gate or disarm something, that is not a specification line to skim past. Older Z-Wave remotes pair without it and are correspondingly easier to listen to.

Charging, not battery changing

A rechargeable LIR2450 cell inside, topped up over Micro USB, with about three months from a full charge. So it is four times a year on a cable rather than hunting for an unusual coin cell, and there is no cover to prise open. Range is up to 30 m indoors and 120 m outdoors.

What it needs

A Z-Wave controller, which is not included. Three of ours will drive it: the Fibaro Home Center Lite, the Fibaro Home Center 2 and the Homey Pro.
