About this product
Apple TV HD puts the Apple world on an ordinary television: the App Store, Apple TV+, Netflix, YouTube, and AirPlay so anything on an iPhone, iPad or Mac lands on the big screen in a second. Siri is on the remote, so you ask for the film instead of spelling its name out one letter at a time with a directional pad.

AirPlay is the reason an Apple household buys this box
Anything on an iPhone, iPad or Mac goes to the big screen in a second, without cables, casting apps or pairing rituals. Photographs from the weekend, a video somebody sent, a match on a browser tab, a presentation. If the house runs on Apple devices this is the feature that gets used daily, and it is the one that no amount of app catalogue comparison captures.
Read this: the Apple TV HD is 1080p, not 4K
Output is up to 1080p over HDMI 1.4. On a 1080p television that is exactly right and the box is a genuine bargain. On a 4K set you are feeding an Ultra HD panel a Full HD picture, and the Apple TV 4K is the model you want instead. Check the back of the television before ordering; this is the commonest mistake made with these two.
The Ethernet socket earns its place here
There is a 10/100 Ethernet port alongside 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO. On an evening when the wireless is congested and a stream keeps buffering, a cable settles it permanently. Very few streaming sticks offer a socket at all, and in a house where the router is near the television it is the cheapest fix for the most annoying problem.
The Siri Remote does more than search
A glass touch surface for scrubbing through a film, an accelerometer and a gyro so the App Store games actually work, and an infrared transmitter, which means it switches the television on and changes its volume. It charges over Lightning rather than taking batteries. Ask Siri for a title instead of spelling it out with a directional pad.
Before you order
An HDMI cable is not in the box, so add one. The box runs the A8 chip with 32 GB of storage, passes Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 through to a receiver, and is 98 mm square and 425 grams.
For a 4K television, the Apple TV 4K is the right one. If the household is not on Apple, the Chromecast with Google TV or the Amazon Fire Stick do the same job on their own platforms. Apple keep the details at apple.com.

Will it do 4K?
No. This one goes up to 1080p. Apple TV 4K is the one for a 4K set, and we sell it alongside this.
Is an HDMI cable included?
No. Buy one to suit the run between the unit and the television.
Can it control my television?
Yes. The Siri Remote has an infrared transmitter, so it can switch the TV on and off and change the volume as well as driving the Apple TV.
Do I need an iPhone?
No. It works on its own with an Apple ID. An iPhone, iPad or Mac adds AirPlay, so anything on their screen goes to the television.
Can I plug in a network cable?
Yes. There is a 10/100 Ethernet socket on the back.
