What an Activity is, and why the Harmony Companion is worth it
One button that does the whole sequence. Press Watch a Movie and the television comes on, the receiver comes on, the decoder comes on and every input switches to the right place. Nobody in the house has to know which of four remotes does which step, or in what order. That single behaviour is the entire product, and it is the reason people who own one refuse to go back.
The hub reaches things a remote cannot
The remote does not talk to the television. It talks to the hub, which sits by the equipment and speaks infrared, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. So a games console answers over Bluetooth, a streaming stick over Wi-Fi, and an old amplifier over infrared, all from the same button. Point the remote anywhere you like; line of sight stops being a consideration.
Equipment behind a closed cabinet door
The IR mini blaster in the box runs on a 2.54 m cable, so infrared can be delivered inside a cupboard while the doors stay shut. The hub has two 2.5 mm blaster ports, so a second one can be added. This is the answer to a sitting room where nobody wants to look at a stack of black boxes.
Six buttons for the lights, not just the television
The remote carries six home control buttons for lights, blinds, plugs and scenes, and the hub handles an unlimited number of smart home devices alongside up to eight entertainment ones. So the button that starts the film can dim the room at the same time, which is the point at which a universal remote stops being about television and starts being about the room.
The practical details
Setup is through the Harmony app. It works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The remote runs about a year on the CR2032 included, the hub takes power and data over Micro USB, and the hub radios are infrared, Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz.
For a colour touchscreen, a rechargeable battery in a cradle and up to 15 devices, the Harmony Elite is the step up. Wikipedia keeps the Harmony range history.

What is an Activity?
One button that sends every command a scene needs at once. Watch a Movie can switch on the TV, wake the receiver, select the right input and start the player, in the right order.
Will it work if my equipment is in a cupboard?
Yes. That is what the IR mini blaster is for. It runs on a 2.54 m cable from the hub and sits inside the cabinet with the gear.
Does the remote have a screen?
No. This one is buttons. The Harmony Elite is the model with the colour touchscreen, and we sell that too.
What battery does the remote take?
One CR2032, and it comes with one fitted. Logitech rate it at about a year.
Can it control my lights?
Yes. Six home control buttons on the remote drive lights, blinds, plugs and scenes, and the number of smart home devices is not capped.
