What the Echo Dot Clock Glacier White is for
A bedside table, mostly, and a kitchen counter after that. The LED display sits behind the fabric and shows the time, the outside temperature, a timer counting down and the title of what is playing. In white it reads as a small piece of furniture rather than as a gadget, which on a pale bedside table or in a white kitchen is the difference between something you keep out and something you put in a drawer.
Timers are the kitchen argument
Say how long you want and watch it count down on the front of the speaker, from across the room, with your hands covered in flour. That is a better experience than a phone on a counter and considerably better than shouting at a device to ask how long is left. Several timers can run at once and you can name them, which is what actually happens when you are cooking three things.
It does not glare at night
The brightness adapts to the light in the room, so the display is readable in daylight and dim enough at three in the morning not to wake anybody. A bedside clock that gets this wrong ends up face down or under a cloth, and then it is just a speaker you paid extra for.
What it shares, and what it lacks
Everything else is the standard Dot: music, radio, questions, reminders, intercom to other Echo devices, control of your smart plugs and bulbs, a temperature sensor for routines, and a button that cuts the microphones electrically. What it lacks is a Zigbee radio, so Zigbee sensors and bulbs still need a gateway.
Which one to buy
In cloud blue if the room is dark or wooden and you want the speaker to register as an object. In this glacier white if the room is pale and you would rather it faded into it. Without the clock, the plain Dot in the same white costs less.
If you want a real screen at the bedside with no camera in it, that is the Echo Spot. If Alexa itself is new to you, Wikipedia has the background.

What does the display actually show?

It dims itself to the light in the room, and you can set it lower or turn it off in the app.
