A correction to the old description on this page. The supplier copy claimed 16 amps. That belongs to the electric floor-heating version of a near-identical looking thermostat, not to this one. This is the boiler variant, and a boiler thermostat is a low-current control device: it sends a signal, it does not carry the heating load. The manufacturer is not consistent about the exact figure, which we have set out below rather than picked a side on, but both figures agree that it is a small number. Do not size a heating element against 16 amps on the strength of the old text.

It needs a neutral at the switch position, and it is a hard-wired device in an 86 mm back box, so it belongs to an electrician.

What a boiler thermostat actually switches

A boiler thermostat is a control device, not a load switch. It reads the room temperature, decides when heat is needed, and closes a contact to tell the boiler to fire. The heating load runs through the boiler, never through the thermostat.

That distinction is the reason the current rating on a boiler thermostat looks small next to a floor-heating panel that looks almost identical on the wall.

The manufacturer is not consistent about the real figure: their manual says 3 A and their own product page says 5 A. We have printed both in the table rather than picking the flattering one. Both agree it is a small number, and neither is 16. Do not size a heating element against 16 amps on the strength of the old text.

Fitting

It needs a neutral at the switch position, takes an 86 x 86 mm square back box or a 60 mm round one, and runs on a 95 to 240 V supply drawing under 1.5 W on standby. The sensor is an NTC3950 10K, accurate to half a degree over a 5 to 35 degree setting range.

Rating is IP20, indoor dry locations only. This is a hard-wired mains device on a heating circuit, so it belongs to an electrician rather than to a confident afternoon.

Getting one fitted

This is a signalling device on a boiler circuit, so it is an electrician job and it needs a neutral at the switch position. Neither is difficult, both are worth knowing before the wall is opened.
