About this product
The Amazon Fire Stick 4K is a streaming stick the size of a thumb that hangs off the back of the television and does everything a set-top box does. Ultra HD at up to 60 frames a second, with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, and Dolby Atmos passed through to a soundbar or receiver.

What the Amazon Fire Stick 4K gives you over the Full HD one
Ultra HD at up to 60 frames a second, and all four of the HDR formats that matter: Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. HDR is the part people underrate. Resolution only shows on a big screen from close up; HDR changes how a picture looks from any seat, because it widens the gap between the darkest and brightest parts of the image. On a 4K HDR television, this is where the difference is visible.
Dolby Atmos passed through to your sound
The stick does not try to decode Atmos and play it through the television speakers, which would be pointless. It passes the signal through HDMI to a soundbar or receiver that can do something with it. If you have that kit, this is the stick that feeds it properly; if you do not, the audio still works and the Atmos line simply does not apply to you yet.
The MIMO radio is doing real work
Inside is a 1.7 GHz quad core MediaTek MT8695 with 1.5 GB of memory, and a dual band 802.11ac radio with MIMO. That last one is not marketing: a 4K stream is a demanding thing to pull over wireless, and a single antenna stick in a house full of phones is exactly how you end up watching a film that drops to a blur every ten minutes. MIMO is what keeps it steady.
Two practical notes
The Alexa Voice Remote has power, volume and mute for the television, so the old remote can be put away. And keep the HDMI extender in the box: on a wall mounted set the stick often will not sit flush in the socket without it, and it is the first thing people throw out.
What you need
A 4K television with a spare HDMI port, a Wi-Fi connection and an Amazon account. If the set is 1080p, this stick will work but you are paying for a picture the television cannot show, and the plain Amazon Fire Stick is the honest recommendation. Storage is 8 GB, and the adapter and two AAA batteries are included.
The 4K Max adds Wi-Fi 6, more memory and AV1 decoding for a busy network. Dolby explain what Dolby Vision does if the format names are new.

Questions
What do I need for the 4K to actually show?
A 4K television, a spare HDMI port on it, and a connection fast enough for the stream. The stick handles the rest.
Does the remote control the television as well?
Yes. Power, volume and mute buttons drive the TV itself, not just the stick.
Will Dolby Atmos work on my soundbar?
It passes Atmos out over HDMI. Whether you hear it depends on the soundbar or receiver supporting it.
How is this different from the 4K Max?
The Max has a faster processor, 2 GB of memory instead of 1.5 GB, and Wi-Fi 6. Both put the same 4K Dolby Vision picture on the screen.
What is the small HDMI extender for?
A wall mounted television, or a set whose HDMI ports face the wall. The stick plugs into the extender and the extender into the TV.
