Privacy Policy

What personal information we hold, why we hold it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

This policy explains what personal information SmartHome Tanzania collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and what you can ask us to do with it. It is written to sit with Tanzania’s Personal Data Protection Act, 2022.

Who is responsible

SmartHome Tanzania is the data controller for the information described here.

What we collect

  • What you give us when you order. Your name, phone number, email address, delivery address and the contents of the order.
  • What you give us when you message us. Anything in a WhatsApp thread, an email or a contact form, including photographs of your door, your switch box or a fault.
  • Your account, if you create one. Your login details and your order history.
  • Site usage. Your IP address, the pages you look at, the device and browser you use, and how you arrived at the site. Some of this is collected by cookies, which are listed in our Cookie Policy.
  • Installation notes, where we survey or fit at your premises. What was installed, where, and what it is connected to.

We do not ask you for a mobile money PIN, a bank card number or a password to any account, and no one from SmartHome Tanzania will ever ask you for one. If someone does, it is not us.

Why we hold it

  • To take your order, get it to you, and take payment for it.
  • To answer your questions before and after the sale.
  • To handle a refund, a replacement or a warranty claim.
  • To arrange and carry out an installation.
  • To keep the accounting and tax records we are required by law to keep.
  • To keep the site working, to keep it secure, and to understand which products people look at.
  • To send you an offer or an update, where you have asked us to.

We rely on your consent, on the need to perform the contract between us, and on our legal obligations, depending on which of the purposes above applies.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not rent it out to anyone.

We share what is necessary, and only what is necessary, with:

  • Delivery partners. Riders in Dar es Salaam, and courier or bus operators for the rest of Tanzania, get your name, phone number and address so they can hand the parcel to you.
  • Mobile money operators, for payments and refunds.
  • Our hosting and technical providers, who run the servers this site sits on and protect it from attack.
  • Meta, through the advertising pixel on this site, described below and in our Cookie Policy.
  • A manufacturer, where you have asked us to raise a warranty claim on your behalf and they need your details to process it.
  • The authorities, where we are required by Tanzanian law to hand something over.

The Meta advertising pixel

This site carries the Meta pixel, which is a small piece of code from the company behind Facebook and Instagram. It tells Meta that a browser visited a page here, so that we can measure whether our advertising is working and show our adverts to people who have looked at the shop.

It does not tell Meta your name, your phone number or your address. You can limit it in your Facebook and Instagram ad settings, and you can block it in your browser as described in our Cookie Policy.

Where your information is held

Our records are held in Tanzania and on servers run by our hosting provider. Some of the services we use, including the advertising pixel and our email, are run by companies based outside Tanzania, so some information is processed abroad. We only use providers that commit to protecting it.

How long we keep it

  • Order and payment records: for as long as tax and accounting law requires us to keep them.
  • Installation records: for as long as we may need them to support the system we fitted.
  • Messages and enquiries that did not lead to a sale: normally no more than two years.
  • Account details: until you ask us to close the account.

Keeping it safe

The site runs over an encrypted connection, access to our systems is limited to the people who need it, and the site is behind a security firewall. No system is perfect, and if something happens that puts your information at risk we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.

Your rights

Under the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you, and give you a copy of it;
  • correct anything that is wrong or out of date;
  • delete information we no longer have a reason to keep;
  • stop using your information for marketing;
  • stop or limit a particular use of it.

Message us on WhatsApp at +255 65 482 1162 or email info@smarthome.co.tz and we will deal with it. There is no charge. We may ask you to confirm who you are first, so that we do not hand your details to somebody else.

Some information we have to keep even after a request to delete it, because tax and accounting law requires it. Where that is the case we will tell you which part and why.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Personal Data Protection Commission in Tanzania.

Marketing

We only send offers to people who have asked for them. Every message we send has a way to stop it, and you can also just tell us on WhatsApp and we will take you off the list.

Children

This shop is meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect information about children, and if you believe a child has given us their details, tell us and we will remove them.

Changes

We will update this page when what we do changes. The date of the last change is the date this page was last edited.
